The briefing was no longer a Harlow affair. Senior investigating officers from the other major investigation team were seated around the oval desk under fluorescent lighting.A lone picture of Esther was prominently placed in the centre of a whiteboard charting what evidence had been collected so far. Photos of the belt that was recovered, the silver pendant and an aerial view of the location of the remains surrounded a picture of her. Next to this was who was thought to be the next victim—a pretty, curly haired young woman, with a beaming white smile. The photo had been blown up from the college pass which had been found in her bag. A belt found around her neck was similar to the one on Esther—a brand that was mass manufactured and it was therefore unlikely to be traced back to a specific shop. The contents of her bag gave away nothing more, only a lipstick, comb and a small mirror were found.

Colleen stood at the head of the table.

“The second victim found at the scene is believed to be Tracey Carver, aged seventeen. We’ve got a missing person’s report filed on September 24th 1984. Her mother was the one who filed it. She said Tracey hadn’t returned home from an evening out —there were no known boyfriends, but like Esther she was a frequent visitor to the woods. We’ve been trying to get in touch with her mother since this morning but to no avail, so DS McCoy and DC Taylor will be going there after this briefing to tell her the news.

Ashley was deep in thought. It’s as if the perpetrator just picked his victims out of thin air— he was an opportunist. That’s why they couldn’t move any further with the leads—there weren’t any, they were random attacks. Unless . . . unless both victims met him by coincidence—but how would this link Aaron and Peter to him?

“Right, Ashley, tell us what you’ve got on this Aaron Davies character.” Colleen’s voice brought her attention back to the room.

“Well,” she said standing, unconsciously playing with the cuff of her shirt. “Mr Davies is an only child, no other siblings. He had an abusive father who died when he was a teenager as the result of an accident. His mother died ten years ago due to natural causes. He was born and brought up in Hertford. He’s single, never married, no kids—can’t find any previous girlfriends.

“We talked to the principal at the college he attended and he spoke of nothing but praise for him and said he was kind and helpful to the bereaved and that sort of thing.” She cleared her throat. “He left the church when he had some sort of breakdown brought on by these so called visions. For the past eight years he’s been touting himself as a medium. I did a background search on his shows, his popularity has been waning the last couple of years until recently. Well until his name was connected with this case.
