Dinner consisted of cheesy pizza that filled her tummy and lots of laughter that filled her heart. They were currently on the way back to the Elliot’s home so she could pick up her car and return to her apartment. The problem was that Ava was in no hurry to leave Nate and Lizzy’s company. She enjoyed being with them. It felt right, as if she belonged, and she loved spending time with them.

“Look! Christmas trees!” Lizzy happily exclaimed from the back seat of Nate’s luxury German crossover.

Ava, who had been unsuccessfully trying not to stare at Nate, turned her head to see what had Lizzy so excited. She remembered riding past the Christmas tree lot on the way to the pizzeria but now the place sparkled and twinkled with thousands of lights. The scene was cheerful, inviting, and Christmassy.

“Daddy, you promised we’d get a tree this year.” Lizzy reminded her father with a pout. “And Christmas will be here in a little over a week.”

“I know, ladybug. This year’s been busier than usual,” he said with a tired sigh.

“Well, let’s get one now while Ms. Noël is with us so she can help decorate it!”

Reluctant for the pleasant evening to end, Ava readily agreed with Lizzy’s idea. “I’d love too if it is all right with you, Nate?” She didn’t want to outwear her welcome. She never bothered with a tree just for herself and the idea of helping the Elliots decorate a tree was appealing.

“I did promise Lizzy we’d get a tree and Christmas is only days away. When it comes to decorating, the more the merrier as far as I’m concerned.” He made a face that told Ava decorating was not his thing.

“I wasn’t going to bother. Maybe trimming a tree with the two of you will give me some Christmas spirit.” She’d never been big on the season. Her mother was always too drunk or high to celebrate, and the foster homes she’d been a part of hadn’t usually gone to the trouble for various reasons. Lizzy’s excitement, however, was rubbing off on Ava.

“Far be it for me to keep anybody from getting the Christmas spirit!” Nate signaled and moved into the left lane, executed a U-turn at the next light, and drove into the parking lot adjacent to rows and rows of evergreen trees.

Ava looked around with wide eyes filled with wonder. She’d never had a real Christmas tree before and this was a new and exciting experience. Several loudspeakers blared jolly Christmas music throughout the lot, making her smile. Lizzy skipped around her and Nate, happily singing along. Ava joined her, adding her soft voice to the well-known song that urged people to have a holly jolly Christmas.

“Let’s move toward the center and work our way outward,” Nate suggested as soon as the carol ended and Ava and Lizzy finished singing.

Being new to this Christmas tree hunting thing Ava just shrugged. She was pleasantly surprised when masculine fingers laced with hers. She didn’t pull away.
