Of the thousands of Neolithic burial structures which are astronomical aligned, Maeshowe Burial Chamber is the king. Perhaps as well known as the cairn itself are its alignment properties. In the weeks leading up to the winter solstice (the shortest day) the last rays of the setting sun shine along the entrance passage illuminating the inner chamber, as seen in the photograph in Figure 36.[88]
