The geese always made her laugh. They were a noisy lot and they never stopped complaining about… well, whatever it is that geese complain about. But Helen preferred them to the castle swans, which she said were meaner and always biting people. And once she was old enough to ride, she loved horses as well, and became the secret darling of the stablefolk—that was important later, as she grew up. More than once, she took refuge from the schoolroom there; I remember because I was so often the one who was sent to find her. And some days I took my time about it, not wanting to spoil her fun.

The nurse and her daughter had other lessons for the princess as well: how to dress herself, all the way down to her shoes, how to make a fire, even how to cook a simple meal, so that she need never be helpless. For her part, after the princess was old enough to receive lessons from a tutor, the queen brought the nurse’s daughter to live in the palace, to act as both a companion and a nursemaid, but also to be educated along with the princess.
