Chapter 19
Friday
I checked in with Joyce, as promised, and did my best to get her back on side but she thwarted my attempts and demanded to know who I was seeing. Even if I wanted to tell her, it would have served no purpose because now I knew about Charlotte, it would only be a matter of time before whatever Richard and I had ended, so what good would it do? The less she knew the better.
I had not seen Richard since we left each other at the Ritz. I know I should have been ready to hang, draw and quarter him but had resigned myself to the fact that our time was precious and I was not going to let anything spoil it. I had no idea where he was taking me, but knowing Richard, it was definitely going to be something I had never experienced before.
What made matters worse was Richard insisted on picking me up at the flat and he would not take no for an answer, which meant I spent most of the evening tidying up. I wondered what he would make of my humble abode. He probably had his own personal valet or something, but I was by no means ashamed of my place; I loved it and it was my home. I worked hard to pay the mortgage every month, which I somehow knew Richard would appreciate.
I was glad that I had taken Annaâs advice to buy one pair of expensive shoes that must be black, as they would go with anything. I pulled out the shoebox containing my LK Bennettâs, removed them carefully from the box and examined them. They set me back three hundred pounds; the most I had ever spent on any shoe I own. I suddenly thought about how this would be a flash in the pan for someone like Charlotte Hemmings, but quickly decided that if I stood a chance of getting through this evening I must take all my feelings for her and seal them away in an imaginary chest in the corner of my mind.
I was still in my robe when I heard the doorbell and panicked, as Richard was not due for another hour. On opening the door, a stone faced Anna barged past me and into the flat without saying hello.
âOh come in why donât you.â I said.
âI want to know everything! Itâs the least you can do after the grilling your sister has been giving me ⦠Oh my God, this dress is wicked.â
I entered the front room to find Anna sizing the white dress up against her body in my living room mirror.
âYou do know this is an original? OMG I cannot even begin to think how much this set him back. Iâm not even going to ask ⦠ok, tell me, how much did this set him back?â
âI didnât ask.â I carefully removed the dress from Anna and returned it to my bedroom. Anna followed me in, sitting on the bed, intensely watching me apply the final touches to my make-up.
