Chapter 5

When Makai finished, he reached for his glass of wine, his mouth slightly dry, and was dismayed to find the glass empty. He’d have to get up for more, but there was another matter to address first. Toward the end, when he recited the last handful of sentences, Nolan had untangled himself and sat up, his gaze fixated on the fire; which at this point could use a good stoking. Makai quietly closed the book, fighting back the urge to clear his throat. The doubt he thought gone once again reared its ugly head.

What if reading that passage, a day that meant so much to him, had somehow shifted things between them?

You’ve gone and lost your mind, Makai mentally chastised himself, it’s not like you haven’t said those words again since that day.

And it was true, they’d both uttered them a few more times since, and every time Makai said I love you, he found he meant it even more than the last. He was hopelessly in love, and thought Nolan to be, too. Could he have completely missed the mark? Could he have read all the signs wrong, blinded by his own feelings and desires?

“Nolan?” He practically whispered.

When Nolan turned to glance over his shoulder Makai spied the all too familiar sparkle of tears in his eyes. A few had already broken free and trailed down his cheeks. The sight of them was like fuel to the fire, fanning his doubt back into a full-blown panic.

“I’m sorry,” Makai quickly apologized, though for what he did not know. “Whatever I did to upset you, I’m sorry. Just tell me what I can do to make it better.”

Surprisingly, Nolan chuckled, wiping the back of his hand across his face. “You have nothing to apologize for, my dear, you misunderstand. These are tears of joy, not sorrow.” He cupped Makai’s cheek in his hand. “I never knew I was the first. You never said.”

Makai frowned. “The first?” As soon as the words left his mouth, Makai realized what Nolan meant. Not the first in his bed, but the first truly in his heart. “Yes, yes you are, is that okay or is it too much?”

Makai realized he might be over thinking things, but at the same time he knew those words carried a lot of weight. To him, at least, they meant a great deal more than time spent between the sheets; which was why it took him so long to say them. He wanted to be sure he truly meant it.

“I…” Nolan paused as if searching for the right words to say. “I hope I live up to your expectations.” He wrinkled his nose. “No, wait, that’s not quite the word I wanted or the way I wanted to phrase that.”

“It’s okay, I get what you’re saying. And you’re more than I ever dreamed of, Nolan. I’m lucky you picked me.”

Nolan’s eyes grew wide. “You’re lucky? I thought I was the lucky one.”

“Then perhaps we both are.”

Nolan smiled. “Then let’s toast us.
