BY THE NEXT MORNING, another storm had rolled in, turning the sky leaden and blotted by thick, dark clouds masking the sun. Claire didn’t mind the clouds. There was a texture and variety of the seasons here in the Pacific Northwest that was new and wonderful to her, and she even loved the wintry rain.

After she’d gotten home the night before, Claire had spent a couple of hours on her laptop. She’d read as much as she could about cyanide poisoning, even though she hadn’t learned a whole lot more than she’d found in the diner. She’d also looked at the Facebook pages of the Park family, all while muttering to herself that the family really should get Michaela to help them with their security. Her page was the only one that was set up to prevent Claire from seeing every detail of her life.

It had become an easy routine to either meet Scott at the Dogwood Café for breakfast or to have him pick her up, and this time she drove herself. In the back of her car, she had four boxes of baked goods, all picked out with the intent of making a condolence call on the Park family. She hoped that her offerings wouldn’t be rejected because of what happened with the cake, but Scott said he’d heard already that no one believed the bakery was responsible for killing her. Claire hoped the members of the Park family felt the same way.

Lucy greeted them at the café’s door with a grin and then led them directly to Darryl Portman’s booth. He was in full uniform, and eating toast with two eggs over easy and a side of bacon. As soon as they slid into the booth Claire ordered the same. There was no reason to waste time looking over the menu when there was news to be had.

“So...” she said with a wicked grin. “Tell us.”

He winced as he swallowed, then said, “What? You haven’t heard yet? I would’ve thought the news would be all over town by now.”

Claire’s eyes widened. “Well, that sounds interesting. What happened? We’ll find out sooner or later, so you might as well give in and just tell us.”

Darryl hemmed and hawed a bit, but Scott sided with Claire. “You know she’s right, Darryl.”

“Well, here’s the deal,” Darryl said. “It was quite a meeting. It turns out the money was split between the children. The fly in the ointment was how Mrs. Park decided to split it.”

Scott and Claire exchanged exasperated glances as Lucy placed the coffee in front of them. Finally, Claire asked, “And how was it split?”

“That’s the extra interesting part. She had a will that was about twenty-two years old, and then had a new one written just after Helen had Michaela. That version took Helen out of the inheritance and left her with nothing. All the money that would have been Helen’s was moved over to Ethan.”

Claire wasn’t surprised to hear what that meant, and she could see by Scott’s face he wasn’t any more surprised than she, but equally disgusted.
