The next morning, I knocked on Priest’s door, a plate of freshly made pastries in my hand. He opened it, and I bit back a laugh at his disheveled hair and greenish-tinged skin. I offered the plate, but he wrinkled his nose and shook his head.

“Not too sure I’m feeling like pastries. And I know Kellen won’t want them.”

I nodded sympathetically, able to count on one hand the number of times I’d been drunk, but I’d never been sick or been hung over the next day. Maybe it was good genes or the fact that I stayed hydrated.

Or maybe it was because I never, ever, drank enough to let myself go fully.

“Well, they’ll save in the fridge,” I said, pushing the paper plate into his hands. “Wheat toast and eggs for you both.”

Priest’s eyebrows bounced up. “Your nurse friend tell you that or you know it from experience?”

I raised my eyebrows back at him. “I know it from being the child of two functional addicts. Sometimes, that addiction was alcohol, and you learn fast what works to make them stop puking and what doesn’t.”

Priest clicked his tongue. “My parents were the same, ‘cept they never tried to cure their hangovers.”

“We’ll commiserate some other time on our mutual poor upbringings,” I said, taking hold of my bike. “I’ve got to run.”

He gave me a nod instead of a wave, and I pushed the bike down the hall, climbing onto it when I got into the parking lot and coasting most of the way into work. When I got there, I dropped off a roll at Pak’s desk to make up for basically shoving him yesterday, then went to see Elissa and drop off another.

“Oooh,” she said, eyes widening as she unwrapped the pastry. “You start bringing in breakfast it might get you off coffee duty.”

I groaned, leaning dramatically into the wall of her desk. “Oh, come on. I thought getting hired would get me out of that.”

“Technically, you’re not hired until you sign the papers,” she pointed out, using her thumb to wipe gooey cream cheese off her lips. “This is the last week you’ll have to do it, though. Gina said we’re getting another intern and you can pass on your coffee legacy to the next poor soul. Maybe convince them to still give us the discount though? Now that we hired you?”

I rolled my eyes and playfully snatched the card out of her hand. “Fine. I’ll feed your addictions for one more week. But you owe me for the time it takes to do this.”

“I agree. How about drinks this Friday? Don’t give me an excuse, Noelle. We should celebrate.”

Elissa stared hopefully at me while I gritted my teeth. “I ran into an old friend a few weeks ago, and she rarely has time off from work and we were going—”

“She can come, too.”

“But there’s something else. Another friend of mine just got… accepted or whatever into his motorcycle club, and they’re going on a ride or something. He’s probably going to ask me to—”

“Motorcycle club?” She sat up, eyes alight with interest.
