‘Styled on a donkey-jacket, brother. What do you think? Fits a treat, don’t it?’

Taking off his new coat, Jayson was holding it up. It was his first remark after they’d got back to the basement. The Syrian didn’t look, said nothing. After his night on the garage floor and the dramas of the day he was trembling with exhaustion, near collapse. They hadn’t dared transfer the bomb back to the concrete box in daylight, which meant driving around with it till dark, doing their best to keep it under cover: sitting in car parks, stopping under bridges. And all the time Amer fretting silently at the thought of it dangling again from the faulty winch.

The Syrian need never have worried. Edging into the alley just after eleven, they stopped. Some hoodlum in a woolly hat was backing what looked like a truckload of loot into a garage a dozen yards from their box. Switching off their lights, they watched as he closed makeshift doors and disappeared inside. Taken up residence, obviously, so that was the end of the concrete box.

All the way back to Scrubs Lane Amer worried away about security. Parking the van in the garage for a few days was one thing; leaving it longer – a week or more, who knew? – something else. Did Jayson’s Albanian still work at the petrol station? So shiftless and unreliable, these immigrants. Was he Muslim – and what kind? Might he have a duplicate key, and who rented the other garages? Questions to which Jayson’s perky reply – that the way to be sure was to fill up at the garage on the way back and have a chat to the fellow – seemed less than serious.

It was one in the morning by the time they got back to the basement, the security of the van compromised, Amer feeling ill, the Day of Glory a fiasco. And Jayson asks his opinion on his cut-price coat.
