CHAPTER SEVEN
Xander stared at the book in front of him, the same page heâd been trying to read for the last half hour and still he couldnât comprehend a word of it. With a soft curse, he slammed the book closed, cringing as the fragile leather creaked ominously and then resignedly placed it back on the shelf. Sinking into a Shakespeare or a Chaucer was one of his favorite past times, but something was driving him to distraction. No, not something. Someone. And he knew at exactly whose feet to lay the blame.
He could hear her even now in the nursery down the hall from his study. She was singing some wordless tune, her voice soft and sweet and so damned infuriating that he had to clench his hands into fists instead of tossing the two-hundred-year-old book across the room. Over the decades, heâd taught himself the virtue of patience. He never let anything ruffle him. But heâd never met Clara Watson before. That was a trial to test any manâs limits.
He was at a loss. He could admit it to himself even if he didnât have a damn clue about what to do about it. Normally, if he wanted companionship of the female variety, he would go to any number of local bars and find someone willing to share his bed for a night or two. And then they would both go their separate ways. But it was different this time, so different it was almost impossible for him to wrap his mind around and he was clever. Very clever.

It had been a week since that day in the glade when they had talked, sharing the hidden parts of themselves, and she had kissed him so sweetly, so innocently it was almost enough to break him. But then sheâd run from him, and even though they had lived in the same house, they could just as well have been states apart, countries even.
Things between them grew ever more tense, lust and confusion wrapping around them like a physical thing drawing them close, pulling them away. And it was damned inconvenient. He recalled the morning a few days before when he had walked into the bathroom to find her soaking in the oversized bathtub. Sheâd been naked and wet, her skin concealed beneath the mountain of bubbles, but it was all too easy for him to remember her lush curves and the hidden ecstasy of her body.
Heâd been instantly, painfully, hard and sheâd flushed so prettily it had been all but impossible not to kiss her, to slide his hands beneath the warm water, teasing and caressing in all the ways he knew she liked until she was moaning and crying out against his hands. But as the pleasure faded from her sapphire blue eyes, the tension returned and he was left with the most painful erection of his life while she fled with his towel.
If that had been the
