“What song?” I asked.

“ ‘Suzanne.’ ”

While I looked at him, trying to make the connection, he sang it to me. “ ‘Suzanne takes you down to a place by the river, and she gives you tea and oranges that come all the way from China …’ ”

“Yes, of course…”

Leonard Cohen. Even I knew that. So, that’s what Tony had meant when he talked about “all that Leonard Cohen stuff.”

Ronnie and I were of a mind not to dance naked, and having that in common, we found conversation between us came more easily. His tolerance of Tony’s energetic devotion to the sensual vices was reassuring. Steeling myself against any attempted coercion, I had grown increasingly tense—a feeling that wasn’t helped by my confusion over the ease with which Lily had slipped off some of her clothes. In contrast, Ronnie was only mildly amused, and as relaxed as a man can be who has seen it all before and anticipates no threat. If three semi-naked girls didn’t arouse him, then it seemed okay that they didn’t arouse me either. I’d found myself close to the outer limits of my comfort zone, for reasons that I wasn’t at that moment prepared to dwell on.

“Is it even possible,” I asked, “that Leonard Cohen really wrote that song about Suzanne Finch?”
