Chapter 9

“Off?” Privately, Theo thought his cousin must have finally come to her senses. She was too young to be getting married. “What happened?”

“Her piece-of-crap fiancé cleaned out her bank account.” Flint shot Theo a dark look. “For whatever reason, she put his name on it. Now her money is all gone. I’d like to find the son of a bitch and punch him in the face. She’s brokenhearted.”

“Jimmy Johnson?” Despite having the same name as a famous football coach, Jimmy had seemed a nice enough guy. Theo had met him a few times. What he lacked in height, he made up for in personality. Outgoing and talkative, he’d seemed better suited to have been a salesman than a guy doing auto work in a body shop.

“Are you sure?” Theo asked when Flint didn’t respond. “He doesn’t seem the type. Plus, he really appeared to love Molly.”

“The first thing I learned when I became a cop is nine times out of ten, appearances are deceiving.” As he stared morosely into his beer, a muscle worked in Flint’s jaw. “I’ve got men looking for him now.”

“Well, he can’t have gone far,” Theo pointed out. “With the quarantine and all.”

“True.” Flint took another long drink, before turning to face his brother. “Who runs off with a quarantine in place? He never was the sharpest tool in the toolbox.”

“Maybe he thinks he can figure a way to sneak out.”

“Maybe.” Flint sighed. “There are others who apparently think the same way. But those CDC people aren’t messing around. I know you saw the National Guard the other day. They’ve set up even more roadblocks and barricades. They’re determined no one is leaving this town.”

Theo winced. “Which means Ellie’s stalker is also stuck here.” He couldn’t help glancing back toward the guy in the booth. The booth was empty. The stranger had gone. Only thing, to get out he would have had to walk past the bar. Theo would have noticed him.

“Hey, Sally Jean,” Theo called, making Flint wince.

“Ready for another?” she asked, gliding around behind the bar.

“Not yet,” Theo said. “Hey, did you happen to see where that guy went? The one who was in the last booth?”

Sally cursed. “No. That turd better not have left without paying his tab.” She practically flew toward the empty booth. “Ah, good. He left enough to cover his beer and a generous tip. That’s what I get for thinking the worst.”

Theo waited until she’d returned and put the cash in the till. “Sally, I didn’t see him leave. Did you guys put in another door that I don’t know about?”

She frowned. “No. The only other exit is if you go through the kitchen, and there’s a sign on the door that plainly states Employees Only.”

“And we know how everyone pays attention to signs, don’t we?” Theo didn’t bother to hide his sarcasm. “Obviously the guy didn’t want to be seen. It wasn’t Jimmy Johnson, was it?”

“No, of course not. That boy doesn’t drink.”

“Really? How sure of that
