Chapter

Eighteen

Hearing muffled voices, Zane shot upward. His eyes popped, heart raced. He gasped for air, stumbling off the bed in a daze, his heart pounding harder. The voices behind the door became louder.

“One-one minute, okay? I’m on the shitter.”

With a throbbing head, he looked for his pants and boxers and didn’t see his clothes on the floor. He opened the drawers. One after the other, all were empty. When he turned and saw the jewelry on the bed, he knew. He knew she did him dirty.

That bloody bitch.

His eyes went to the door, knowing she left it unlocked. He pulled the sheet for cover. Pulling and jerking, the cover got stuck on the railing and tore. The jewels fell to the floor.

“HANDS UP. NOW. HANDS UP.”

Zane lunged inside the bathroom. Two officers rushed in with their guns up, stumbling over the jewelry, kicking at the bathroom door. Zane lifted his leg atop the sink, squeezing head first through a tight window. Fifty feet of downward air ending on the pavement.

The door kicked open. Zane dropped and hung onto the ledge with his fingertips. He looked up with a gun between his eyes.

“We told the lady that tipped us you’re already locked up,” the officer said.

Zane’s fingers turned red, slowly losing their grip on the ledge. He tried to hang on…

“She said it wouldn’t hurt to come take a look and I didn’t think she meant your coconut bum and two little plums, eh?”

Zane’s fingers skid off the ledge as he twirled in the air for three seconds. He smashed onto the garbage bags inside the dumpster.

“Goner.”

The other officer said, “Mashed them poor plums.”
