Chapter 21

It was called the dungeon. A sterile, windowless room with soundproof walls, the most secure meeting area in the US Embassy in Bogota. It always gave Chuck a sense of claustrophobia. He poured himself his fourth cup of coffee for the day. He had barely slept for the past week since seeing the video Nathaniel had brought back from Buenaventura. An enlarged image of the submarine that was caught in the video was now sitting in front of him and the other three men in the room: Sean Perry, his second in command and the coordinator of the operation targeting the Norte de Valle Cartel, Nathaniel Davidson and Martin Savoy, the US Military Attaché at the Embassy.

Chuck checked his watch. It was 1.58pm. Sean and Nat stared at the large screen at the end of the room. At 2pm exactly the phone in the middle of the table rang. Chuck answered it on the second ring and pressed the remote control. An image filled the screen of a room with eight people; seven men and one woman.

He instinctively straightened up as he saw the people who had been brought to the table in the DEA headquarters in Virginia. Included in the group were Phil Edwards, the Global Director of the DEA, John Nicholson, the Director of the DEA Special Operations Unit and Ronald Smith, the International Coordinator of the operations against the Norte de Valle Cartel as well as three US-based agents from the operation.

‘It’s good to see you all at today’s meeting,’ Chuck said. ‘We’re anxious to hear what you’ve been able to find out about the footage we sent you.’

‘Thanks, Chuck. This is very important evidence your team has discovered and we have a solid analysis for you. But before we get started let me introduce you to two faces you may not know. Firstly, Claire Sparrows, newly appointed South America Operations Director with the CIA and Professor Carl Blunt, a world class specialist in Russian Submarines.’ The DEA International Director, Phil Edwards, motioned to the woman to his right who smiled stiffly and then to the middle aged man to his left.

‘Jumping straight to business,’ the DEA Special Operations Unit Director, John Nicholson, said. ‘We sent your video to several image and sound experts, and as you suspected the voices in the background are Russian. Our team was able to extract them from all ambient noises and we had several Russian language specialists analyse them. They all agreed that the accents were from north-east Russia.’

‘So that’s when we brought Professor Blunt in,’ Phil Edwards said. ‘We gave him the image of the submarine. With those images and the origin of the local engineers he has been able to identify what he believes to be the model of the submarine that has been assembled in Buenaventura. Carl, I’ll hand it over to you to share your findings.’
