Chapter 10

“What happened?” Monika asked as soon as Viktor walked back into the hospital room. “What did Aiden want? Oh God, you’re bleeding, what happened to you?”

Viktor shook his head. “Aiden and I had a little disagreement is all. Nothing to worry about.” He touched a finger to his lip where he could feel the cut on the inside with his tongue. Being pinned to the floor, then having Aiden force a kiss on him was scrambling his brains. He’d got hard when Aiden was sitting on him, and he’d been in pain from the pretty accurate head butt Aiden had laid on him. The man fought dirty and focused on vulnerability, a bit like a SEAL, really.

“Why do you and Aiden do that?”

“What? Disagree?”

She reached up and touched his cheekbone, and he winced as she pressed where Aiden’s solid left hook had caught the bone directly. “You were fighting,” she observed. “Why did you fight with him?”

Viktor stepped back out of her reach by pretending to check Ben’s notes. “It’s a man thing,” he said.

“He doesn’t go around hitting anyone else,” she pointed out with a finger stabbing his chest. “He works with the school and the kids there. He’s a nice guy and one day he’ll make someone a great husband. You should be nice to him. You need a boyfriend like him.”

Viktor grabbed at his sister’s finger and captured her entire hand in his. “The last thing I need is a boyfriend like him, or like anything. I’m in and out of this country at the drop of a hat.”

“Might stop you being so pissed off all the time.” She smirked. “And might help you deal with your anger issues.”

“I don’t have anger issues,” Viktor snorted.

They were distracted when Jakub returned with more coffee and a smile to rival his wife’s. “There’s someone waiting outside for you, Viktor,” he said.

“Who is it?”

“Some guy named Samuel Larson from the Forestry Service. Said you called him.”

Larson was here already? Jeez. Talk about quick. “I need to talk to this guy,” he excused himself.

The short conversation with his sister was unsettling and perceptive. He did carry a lot of anger around with him lately, anger bordering on resentment. He was dangerous to himself and others and he knew it. He’d lost the edge, and when a SEAL lost that he pulled himself away from anyone he could hurt. The kiss Aiden had given him was the only kind of connection he really understood these days—hard, fast, kinky, pushing all the limits until he could finally fuck the angst out of himself and actually sleep.

Thank God Aiden had left. If Aiden was anywhere near him when he was talking to the Forestry Service, he would know exactly what Viktor was looking to do. He paused outside the hospital room, and instead of going straight out to reception, he headed for the family room and was thankful the place was empty. He thumbed to Joseph’s name and connected immediately. To carry out what he needed to do he had to ask for help from the team.
