Morana

When we get back to the house, we get out of the Jeep and head inside. Nash grabs the pizzas, and Hunter makes sure to get the bags of candy. I go into the kitchen for a bottle of whiskey as the guys head upstairs for showers and a change of clothes. I do the same, going into my room and stripping out of my bloodied costume. Is it wrong that I want to keep it? It was my first Halloween costume after all, but I don’t think the bloodstains are going to do me any favors.

I start the shower and step inside, watching as the dirt, blood, and black face paint runs down my body and circles the drain. I wash my hair and take my time scrubbing my body clean before getting out. I wrap a towel around my body, and towel dry my hair before running a brush through it.

Walking out of my bathroom and into my closet, I grab one of Ranger’s oversized shirts from the floor and a pair of sweatpants before stepping back out into my room. I hear the guys knock lightly on my door and I call for them to come in.

When they do, we spread out on my bed with our snacks, and we share the bottle of whiskey. Nash finds some horror movies and starts to play them as we dive into the pizza and candy, and pass the whiskey back and forth.

Nash drifts out at the foot of the bed about halfway through the first movie, and Hunter makes it through the first ten minutes of movie number two. I get up and clean off the bed as Ranger watches me.

“Love?” he asks as he takes another swig of the whiskey bottle.

“Yeah?” I ask, removing it from his hand and downing the rest of it, savoring the burn as it coats my throat.

“I love you,” he whispers as his eyes start to flutter shut.

“I know. I love you too, Ranger,” I say, sitting on the edge of my bed and resting my hand on his arm.

“No, like, I really love you,” he slurs his words a little as his eyes close.

“Sure you do,” I whisper, getting up and kissing his cheek.

I pick up the empty pizza boxes, candy wrappers, and the empty bottle of Jack and head downstairs. After putting our trash in the can, I grab a few bottles of water from the fridge and a bottle of Advil from the cabinet.

Turning to head back upstairs, I look down the hall and see a crack of light coming from Dads office. I set my stuff down on the bottom step and walk down the hallway.

Knocking softly on his office door, it swings open, and I see him sitting in his chair with a glass of whiskey looking at a photograph.

“Did you have fun tonight?” he asks without looking up.

I step into his office and close the door behind me. “Yeah, we went trick or treating, and to a haunted house.
