An hour and a half later they emerged—Samantha shakily—from the doctor’s office in Eden. Mark dryly complimented her on her newest “beauty accessory,” her bright new cast. “So what did he say? How’d the X ray look?”

Sam released a silent sigh of relief. He seemed to be over his irritation about her “job”. “Dr. Hodges said my leg is healing nicely. He doesn’t want me putting weight on it yet, but in another week and a half, I can get rid of these permanently.”

She quickly installed herself in the seat of the pickup as he stowed the crutches she’d indicated safely in the bed of the small truck.

“Do you have time to let me run a few errands?” Samantha asked tentatively.

He shrugged noncommittally. “Like what?”

“I need to cash this.” She didn’t need to pat the purse where she’d stashed the check. A flick of his eyes said he remembered quite well. “I need to mail a couple of letters, buy some shampoo and a few other odds and ends.”

Without comment, he turned the opposite direction from home when he pulled away from the doctor’s office. They stopped a few minutes later at the local discount store. After a quick turn around the parking lot, he whipped into the closest available parking slot.

Mark was out and around the vehicle before she could reach for the handle of her door. Opening it, Mark gave her the crutches from the back, then offered her his hand.

She studiously pretended not to see it. She didn’t need the weakness in her knees his touch seemed to produce. She had to focus all her attention on walking with these things.

She’d only managed two steps before he hauled the crutches out of her grasp and cast her over his shoulder like a bag of potatoes. He ignored her gasp of dismay as he reached to drop the crutches over the edge of the truck bed.

Samantha sagged across his back. “Please, Mark,” she protested.

“You aren’t even beginning to be adequate on those monstrosities.” His head tossed toward the truck. “At the rate you’re going, you won’t make it into the store before closing time. I don’t have that much time. If you really need to stop here, you’ll have to do your shopping from there.”

“Never mind.”

His stride shortened slightly, became erratic.

“Please,” she begged.

He stopped altogether. Easing her out of the undignified position, he let her neck settle into the crook of his arm. He lowered her feet to the ground, keeping her securely supported against him with his arms around her waist.

“I’m sorry. Let’s not do this.” The pressure of his body against hers did strange things to her thoughts. “It’s frustrating to work so hard at something and still not have it be right.”

“I understand exactly,” he said, holding her gaze with his own. “You just described how I felt watching you come out of Dr. Hodges’s office. You wouldn’t let me help.” His gaze moved to her lips. “You won’t even let me help you out of the pickup.
