CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN

Marti’s car insurance was due for renewal and at the same time he thought he would insure his house contents. A lot of thought had gone into the latter decision. He rang a few brokers and got some quotes for the car and household things at the same time. The quotes all seemed to be roughly the same. He picked one that was based in Norwich but had a branch office in Cromby.

What he really needed to know, he said, was whether he could get cover for fairly large amounts of cash in the house.

They told him that there was an upper limit for cash held in such circumstances and Marti thought it was ridiculously low. He said that if he completed a car sale he quite often had large sums of money overnight. The insurance companies made the rules, he was told, but they would see what they could find out for him. He should consider cheques or credit card sales instead, or why didn’t he get himself a good safe?

They gave him a good price on the car insurance and if he could call into their Cromby office in a day or two, he would be told what they had found out. Ask for John, he was told.

He found the little branch office that was inside the premises of an estate agent in the main street. He enquired at the desk and was told John was with a client and would be a few minutes.

A door opened at the back of the room and a smartly-dressed man walked to the door with two ladies and held the street door open for them as they left.

The moment the man had come through the first door, Marti had recognised him. It was John from the foster home in Norwich! By the time John saw Marti, a big grin was stretched across his face. John looked at the man with the grin and then he recognised him.

“Marti! This is terrific! I’ve often wondered where you were.” He shook his hand and then slapped him on the shoulder. Marti was still grinning.

“It’s great to find you. I’ve been looking for you,” Marti said.

“Are you living locally still?” John asked as he ushered him through the inner door.

“Yeah. I’ve got a cottage at Croughton,” Marti said. “But I went to Peterborough and then Norwich before I drifted back here. We’ve got a lot of things to discuss, you and I,” he added.

John gave him a quizzical look. “What are you doing these days?” he asked.

“Selling cars in the city,” said Marti.

“Well, let’s get this insurance thing out of the way fast,” said John in a businesslike manner, and as he talked about the proposals Marti realised with a sudden insight that John had built up a facade behind which he could act out his daily life in his smart suit and the image of a young businessman who intended to go places.

John passed him a paper that he signed, and talked some more about the ways in which Marti might ensure the safe-keeping of occasional amounts of money.
