Prompted by the heady sensation of holding Prince Richard’s will in her hands, Marcela puts her place within the court and the world at large into consideration once more. She realizes that, while she has been puppeteer-ing the court around herself to the best of her abilities, she hasn’t been nearly ambitious enough in her endeavors. To do that, she realizes that she requires informants and spies, and so she puts herself to work on building a web that surpasses herself and her ill-considered seat as queen consort to a man who has never given her a view into his politics.

Marcela begins by putting all the knowledge gathered over the years to good use. She has spent years sitting down quietly and hearing people whisper and talk around her, and she now realizes that she holds more secrets within her palm that she’d thought. She treads carefully, using the ladies as her connecting cords and reaching the men through them, using her knowledge of affairs and corruptions with trickling precision and persistence. However, she’s positive that blackmail will only get her so far, and will in fact garner her antipathies where she wants none, so she becomes a steady supplier of what her closest collaborators begin knowing as her elixirs, thus creating a network through punishment and retribution that serves her well, and that allows her to stay on top of the kingdom’s business.

Building and strengthening her chains takes time, and if Marcela manages to succeed, then that is because her first steps are focused within Wayland’s land. Soon after Primrose’s sixteenth birthday, she realizes that she’s not particularly aware of the essential matters of the kingdom, seeing as she has barely left the palace during all these years, and all her knowledge comes from traveling noblemen who care more for court gossip than for commercial trades or border patrols. Marcela decides that what she needs to do is weave her way into King Wayland’s council, a right that should be unquestionably hers as queen of the land, but that Wayland has adamantly denied her many a time before.

She asks her husband for the privilege one more time, and his answer is no different, of course. Marcela suspects that the king has simply gotten used to denying her requests out of spite. Ever since that night long ago after she’d lost their baby, he hasn’t tried to touch her.
