BEING ALONE ONSTAGE

One of the most difficult acting problems is what to do when you are onstage alone. The question then becomes, Where do you put your attention? How do you gauge the success or failure of your action? There are two possible answers. One is to place the test of the action in the audience—to try and get something from them as if they were in the scene with you. The other possibility is to use your imagination and try to succeed with the person you are using in your as-if from your analysis of the scene. This is like rehearsing in the bathroom mirror before asking someone out on a date. You talk to the mirror as if you were talking to that person you want to ask out. Take, for example, the “To be or not to be” monologue from Hamlet. If you were to use the first solution given above, you might analyze it this way:

1. Hamlet is discussing the pros and cons of suicide.

2. The essential action of that is: getting advice from an objective observer.

3. It is as if I were asking my teacher whether or not he thinks I should get married.
