Myron Davies stood in the shade of a large maple as he watched the CarPartscrew at work. The boat was being readied for his arrival: fiberglass hull and super structure washed and wiped, chrome made to sparkle, wood polished, and carpets vacuumed. The galley had already been fully stocked, ready for three meals a day for several days. As usual, his secretary had alerted the captain a day in advance that Myron was to be on board. She didnât know if he wanted to cruise, but she told the captain to be prepared, just in case. Myron would tell the captain his plans for going out on the lake when he got there, she explained.
He looked on for awhile as water splashed, rags swiped and fluttered, mops and sponges flourished, the men intent on their job. He was proud of the huge boat, proud that he could direct its activity, proud that it made such an imposing landmark on the Sandusky waterfront. The tree was a satisfactory prop as he leaned and waited. No hurry, he thought, let them finish before boarding. They know their deadline is ten thirty, and besides, Stan isnât due until eleven.
The drive from Columbus that morning had been leisurely. As he rolled through the countryside, he had felt quite satisfied in the way his phone conversation with Stan had gone the previous day. Stan tried to resist meeting with him, using a variety of excuses, the tone of his voice strained, almost petulant in his lack of cooperation. Myron finally made it clear they would indeed meet the next day regardless of what Stan had noted in his planner. There were no excuses. Have to be flexible, he chided Stan. You have to remember how to be fast on your feet. Remember being fast on your feet? Such flexibility, an ability to adapt, to go with the flow, was a thing of the past for Stan, Myron thought, as he insisted on the meeting with Stan. He believed Stan was too content with his own view of things, thought he was too secure, and thought Myron could be buffaloed. Myron was satisfied that he made Stan squirm with discomfort. Wriggle, wriggle, Stan, too bad, Iâm not one of your customers that you can bullshit.
Myron had created what Stan was and he knew full well that the mode in which the man behaved was his responsibility. Until now, what Stan was and how he operated had not been a problem. In fact, it was a plus. What had he created? A monster? Hardly, but the assessment he now made of his man was not comforting. Everybody - Carol, Wally - assumed right away that Stan had killed Betty. How had he missed that? He didnât like the idea that others seemed to have some insight that wasnât readily apparent to him. How had Stan slipped away from him? He had pondered that question as he drove, but subsequently gave up on the chore of finding an answer.
