Chapter Six - I was just trying to help
When Clair got back to the park, he knew his day was nearly done. Without direction, he decided to walk a bit, with no agenda. This wasnât a patrol. It was a pleasure walk, to take in the good clean air, and to enjoy some thinking time. He looked for the ducks, as he always did. They were accepting the attention of a group of youngsters who had handfuls of feed that they were throwing into the water. The hungry ducks dove for every last kernel, and followed the group of boys and girls around the lake, hoping for more. When they threw what turned out to be their last handful and said their goodbyes, the ducks tried to follow, and it was quite picturesque as they all walked in a line.
Finally, one of the little girls turned around and addressed the group of ducks and ducklings. She said, âIâm sorry, but you canât follow us any farther. I wish you could. I really enjoyed being with you today, but I have to go home now. My mom and dad wouldnât like it if I brought you all home. We already have a dog and a cat, and they might try to eat you. Plus, I donât think thereâs any room for more pets. I think theyâd be mad at me. I donât know, though, they might like you. Youâre awfully cute, each and every one of you. But, I have to go to my home now. This is your home. You stay here, and Iâll come back and visit when I can. Okay?â
She looked down at the ducks and, as if they understood, a few started walking away from her, back to the lake. As they did, one by one, the others followed. The little girl stood there and waved.
Clair continued walking until he got to his favorite spot to look over the park. There was a bench along the trail and from this place he could see the phone booth, part of the parking lot, and a good percentage of the lake. He sat down and let the day wash over him. The warm sun was less direct now, and more loving in its touch. It was a radiant heat that went directly to his soul, the kind that only happened at this exact time in the afternoon. He sat there and absorbed its healing. He would stay until he could feel its powers leave, heading to the next town, or city, or wherever it went. It would be back. They were old friends.
Across the lake, a woman and two young girls were walking. As they approached the phone booth, the woman took the two girls and sat them down on the bench that was just down the hill from it, but well within her view. Though Clair couldnât hear from this distance, he could tell from the body language and her hand and arm movements, what she was telling the girls.
