Chapter 5

Rory woke with a start when Conall’s voice penetrated his sleep. The man wasn’t in his room, but he might as well have been, as loud as his, “Everyone up, and moving. We need to get this show on the road,” was.

Hearing Deke’s low, “Who the fuck put you in charge?” quickly stopped Rory from calling out, “Yes, Master.” Instead, he did as ordered, while he wondered where Conall had slept. When he and Molly had left the living room on their way to bed the previous night, Conall had been sprawled in one of the armchairs, his eyelids at half-mast while he insisted on watching the nightly news. Deke had shrugged before saying that he, for one, intended on getting a good night’s sleep.

Rory had agreed and herded his protesting sister upstairs, with Deke following a few moments later. “My bet is, Conall slept on the sofa,” he told his reflection in the mirror over the dresser as he pulled on a pair of jeans. Then he went down the hallway to the bathroom, glad the door was open because he desperately needed to take a piss.

He’d barely finished, and was brushing his teeth, when Molly knocked, telling him to hurry up. “I need to make breakfast.”

“Hurrying, hurrying,” he told her after rinsing his mouth out. She was dressed, as he discovered when he let her in, but…“Your hair looks like a rat’s nest.”

“Yours isn’t much better.”

“Because I haven’t combed it.”

“Do it in your room,” she retorted, pointing down the hallway. With a laugh, he left, stopping in his room to deal with his hair and finish dressing, and then went downstairs.

Conall was in the kitchen, making coffee. Deke had eggs and sausage sitting on the counter.

“You’re courting the wrath of Molly,” Rory said.

“Is that like the Wrath of Kahn?” Deke asked.

Rory grinned. “Probably worse.”

“Deke,” Molly said from the doorway. “That’s my job.”

“I was only getting everything out for you, little lady.”

“Uh-huh. Since you’re being so ‘helpful’, you can cook the sausage while I make omelets. Rory, set the table.”

“Excuse me?” Rory lifted an eyebrow.

She sighed. “Okay. Would you please set the table?”

He did, Molly and Deke finished making breakfast, Conall poured coffee for the males and milk for Molly, and they sat down to eat.

“How long will it take to get to the cabin?” Rory asked once he’d made inroads into his meal.

“The drive is about twenty minutes, more or less,” Deke replied. “We’ll have to walk the last half mile. It takes an off-road vehicle to handle the dirt road that runs up to cabin from the main one, which my car ain’t.”

Deke called it correctly, as they found out when they hiked up from where they parked in a pull-off several hundred yards from the trailhead.

Molly, being Molly, was more interested in the wildlife that darted across the road, wanting to follow every rabbit or chipmunk when they disappeared into the forest. Rory almost wished he had a leash for her, resorting to grabbing her hand and reminding her they were on a mission and couldn’t be sidetracked.
