Chapter Thirty-Three
“Karla, honey, are you alright?” Leslie asked as she walked out the back door a little while later. Conner looked up from where he sat with Karla curled in his lap and shook his head.
“I can’t believe he’s gone. You have to be wrong. He can’t be dead.”
“Baby, I know how much you love him and I’m so sorry that he’s gone.” Conner whispered into her hair as he rubbed her back and held her close.
“Is John still here?”
“Yes. He’s worried about you and didn’t want to leave until he knew you were okay.” Leslie answered.
“I’m not okay.” Karla told them honestly. “I feel like a part of me is missing. Trent saved me and now he’s gone and I never got to say goodbye. It’s like Mrs. Jones all over again. Part of my family is gone and I’ll never get it back.”
Conner held her tighter as she sobbed into his chest. “I’m not going to tell you that it’ll be okay, but just remember that I’m here beside you, baby.” He tried to comfort her the best he could, but he knew that nothing he said would make her pain go away.
“Karla, can we talk for a minute?” John asked quietly from the door.
When she raised her head off Conner’s chest and nodded he walked out onto the porch and knelt in front of her. “Trent loved you like a little sister, you know that right?”
“Yes and I loved him like another brother.” Karla responded through her tears.
“There is someone I want you to meet.” John told her. “Someone else Trent loved very much.”
“Who?”
“His son.” John answered and rose to his feet.
“His son?” Karla asked in astonishment. “I never knew he had a son.”
“Not many people knew Trent had a son. Lee is fourteen and lives with his mother. Trent and his ex-wife divorced about ten years ago because she couldn’t handle being married to a cop. He never remarried, never even dated much, because he never stopped loving her. Lee was his life, though.”
“You want me to meet his son? Why?”
“Because I think you two can help each other through this. Lee is pretty broken right now and needs someone to talk to. Someone who understands what it feels like to lose someone you love.”
“Does Lee know who I am?” Karla asked curiously.
“Yes. Trent told him about you back when Mrs. Jones died. Lee understands the relationship you had with Trent and he has been asking to meet you. Trent was going to set it up when you got back from your trip. Now I feel like it’s my responsibility to make it happen.”
“I want to meet him.” Karla told them all. “I want to get to know Trent’s son.”
“I’ll arrange it.” John told her and rose to his feet. “Now I have to go help Lee and Janet, Trent’s ex-wife, plan the funeral.
“Please call us if you need anything.” Andrew said from where he was standing in the door. “Trent was always there to help us and we will be there to help his family in any way we can.
