WRITING ON THE PAGES OF ME

I did forget my eyeglasses, but I don’t really need them.

The wickedly quiet magnetism Odell wields drew me to the bathroom one more time, for one more “accidental” run-in with him before I turn him back over to everyone else. With us immersed in the peaceful tranquility of these woods, I’m not ready for bliss to end. In the last twenty-four hours, these simple moments have been heaven, even though I’ve worked much of it.

The first sound waves of Odell’s life have canceled out the noise of my life. His first breaths, first leaps and runs, first snow, and last night, his first kiss after all he’s endured, all belong to me.

It is wholly inappropriate and unethical for me to impose myself on his air. But how many times will any woman ever be told she is a man’s obsession? How would it feel to be the verse he’s penning on paper? A meditation manufactured in the mill of his mind, carefully considered, thoughtfully structured, artfully crafted.

“Yeah,” he answers.

Bitch, stop breathing so hard. “I don’t believe you. How is an obsessed man so disciplined right now?” Why isn’t he all over me?

“You sure as hell don’t make it easy.”

I am still blocking the doorway. Blocking this reunion from ending. Blocking him from another woman who will benefit from him expressing his beautiful fantasies on her.

My thoughts keep flitting from one side of my brain to the other—don’t be the stupid lady on the murder-mystery show; be his obsession.

He flips off the switch and tries to push past me. I flip it back on.

“Careful, Counselor. I’m doing my damnedest to respect you and not turn into that person who’s been thinking a long time on some shit he’s never done. With anybody.”

The virgin tundra of uncharted territory in me that’s never been touched touches a hand to his chest, where Odell’s horses of excitement gallop under my fingers. Hushed words fall off my lips as light as the snow drifting off the trees outside. “Never done things like what?”

He licks his lips, lowers his head as if he’s ashamed to say. So I raise his chiseled chin until we’re eye to eye again. Every unwritten part of me is dying to know.

“Ma, what about your dude?” he asks. “And I’m your client, and all of what you said last night?”

He’s right. But at the moment, this galactic force between us pulls harder on my axis than any other force in my universe. “How were you having sex in prison? And with whom?”

And I still have so many other questions he hasn’t answered—the Hancocks, him having another attorney, his secrecy.

“Fam sent a couple chicks from the neighborhood I made sure to forget.” His hand meets mine on his chest.

“I didn’t have a right to ask.”

“No. You didn’t. But what if tonight…” Careful, slow, Odell feathers his lips across mine. “We forget all these questions?”

“Only if what we do stays in this cabin. And you don’t judge me tomorrow.
