There was a secret gate only the elite could drive through if they didnât want to be seen going up to Peaks Resort. Mariahâs driver punched in the code and rolled up his blacked-out window as the Bentley rolled on through the gravel.
Many times, Arnold and I had played a drinking game with the guests at the bar about what could possibly be beyond the gates. I wasnât nervous about where Mariah and I were going. I was anxious and wanted this done and over with so I could get home to my kids. I stared out of my window as much as I could. The dusk light made the tall lines of pine trees become haunting and intimidating, and the darkness cast by the shaded windows gave an ominous feel.
Small lights from the driveway pointed up from the bottom of the trees and gave a glow that faded halfway up. Rolling by, I thought it looked like the lights continued a never-ending path.
Mariah reached out and took one of my hands in hers. âWe will get answers,â she said to me, her eyes flickering with a promise.
I nodded, too choked up to answer back. This was the last place I wanted to be, especially without Arnold. The pit of betrayal in my stomach grew with every minute that passed by as we traveled the long driveway.
The vehicle came to a slow stop. A beautiful modern industrial farmhouse sat at the end of the drivewayâs roundabout. The big, beautiful windows revealed the enormous antler chandelier within. There was no mistaking the masculinity.
The darkness of the forest nestled behind us as the stars already blinked. The waxing gibbous moon was not to my advantage, as I could not see much on either side of the house, just the windows and the dim lighting that settled inside.
Mariah stood firm and stared at the house for a second. She put her hair behind her shoulders like she did before board meetings. She was getting into her business character, which she knew how to do best. She turned to me and assured me this was what we needed to do. We needed information on Nestor, and by playing it right, we could get it from the one man who supplied and paid him.
Ron opened the door to us. His tie and the first two buttons of his dress shirt were undone. He looked stressed and exhausted. Slicking back his hair quickly with one hand, he welcomed us into his home. The dark circles under his eyes indicated to me he too had some restless nights. I wanted to applaud, but I followed behind Mariah, allowing her to take the lead before I had to jump in.
âLadies. Please, come in.â He gestured kindly with his front door wide open. The natural wood with industrial trimming was definitely a manâs touch. The color scheme was light, then dark, with dark bronze furniture. The wide-open concept featured dark granite counters, a minibar with old-fashioned neon lights, and a pool table in the dining area.
