Chapter Thirty-Six

17 August, 1941

Toby Pozniak walked several blocks from his apartment to the market. The invasion had interrupted the city’s mercantile system, leaving food and common household goods in short supply. The Germans had implemented a rudimentary system of rationing, restricting each local resident to one bag of groceries per week.

This was Pozniak’s second trip. When he entered the store that morning, he was stunned to see the shelves were nearly bare. A pair of German soldiers met him just inside the door and motioned for him to stop. Without speaking, one of them handed him a leaflet and then let him pass. Pozniak took the leaflet, trying hard not to make eye contact with the menacing soldier. He stepped farther inside the store, away from the door and the guards, and began to read the one-page document.

A swastika was emblazoned at the top of the leaflet. The first sentence proclaimed that the citizens of New York were now under the jurisdiction of the Third Reich and were subject to the orders of Adolf Hitler and his local administrators. Residents were admonished to comply with all directives from the occupation forces for their own safety. Lastly, there was a proclamation ordering all citizens to listen to a radio broadcast on Wednesday, the 20th of August, at 8 p.m.

Four nights later, Toby Pozniak, Marc Krbec and several of their Prospect Heights neighbors gathered around the radio inside Krbec’s home. After two and a half weeks of silence, radios all across New York City once again crackled to life. As they listened to the broadcast coming from the WOR studios in Manhattan, Toby Pozniak and his neighbors heard an ominous voice—the voice of Ernst Kruger.
