Chapter 6

Rules of Engagement

Within a few months, the girls packed up what few things they had and headed off to their newly acquired penthouse apartment. It placed them closer to work from the Manhattan office, and the views were incredible. It had two master suites and enough room to house an army. They had managed to rack up a lot of money working for Classy Ladies, and Connie kept them pretty busy.

The girls made it a cardinal rule to not discuss their activities, and they never brought clients to the apartment. It avoided a lot of awkwardnesses and allowed them to keep at least a small amount of anonymity. Latonya seemed to be somewhat absorbed in her work most of the time, but Charlene was trying her best to maintain her blossoming relationship with Tyrone. He was surprised and happy for her when he found out her new address, and all Charlene told him was that she has scored a modeling contract.

At times, she felt sad that she was finding it increasingly easy to lie, but what disturbed her even more is that one of her top paying clients was a Bishop. Carl Winston was the head over a flock of four hundred thousand people that assumed he was celibate. It really crept Charlene out since her dad was a pastor, but she couldn’t say no to the money he paid. He made it fairly clear that saying no would be a mistake that bring about severe consequences. He never expanded on the meaning, but she decided it was best to not press her luck.

It was times like this that she wished she could be open and talk to what used to be her best friend, but it wasn’t possible. She had seen Latonya at the same restaurants at times. Once she was accompanying Phil Cunningham, one of the princes of Wall Street and then with the Governor. Charlene was sure that Mrs. Edward Sloan would not have approved, but what did she know? These wealthy people seemed to have a lot of backward priorities. She had finally gotten to the point that if they paid cold hard cash she didn’t care.

Both girls were enjoying an unusual evening in and Charlene decided to try and rekindle the friendship some, or at least find out if it was still possible. Latonya seemed to be angry all the time, even though she had been giving more than her fair share of money towards bills and rent. She popped a huge amount of popcorn and brought it into the living room and held it out as a peace offering. Latonya smiled brightly and reached for it.

“Would you like to order a movie?” Latonya asked, holding the remote towards the television quickly changing channels. “There isn’t much on.” Charlene nodded her head.

“Yeah, that sounds good,” she said flatly. Latonya looked at her carefully.

“What’s wrong?” she asked with a serious expression. Charlene put her bare feet up on the coffee table and shrugged her shoulders.

“We don’t talk anymore,” Charlene said softly.
