Chapter Four

Elton: Killing Frost

Elton began cutting up the ingredients for the western omelet, wondering when it had all gone to shit. What had he done that had caused Mackenzie to suddenly seem so cold this morning? It was as if a chill had filled the room.

There was a moment, a moment when his heart had soared, when he thought Mac had put all the hard feelings behind him. Now it looked as if they were back to square one.

He glanced up as Mac came out into the living room, looking fresh from the shower, his hair still damp. He’d put on a clean shirt, left it open. Elton felt like a deer caught in the headlights looking at him. He wanted to drop everything and go into his arms, drag Mac back into that bedroom and stay there all day. All day? What was he saying? All his days. I love you, Mac. I think I have since the moment I set eyes on you. He used to laugh at people who said that that crap.

“You want potatoes?” Elton managed. His mouth felt dry as he watched Mac begin to do up his shirt. “I have some of those frozen hash browns in the freezer.”

“No, I’m trying to watch the carbs,” he said.

“Coffee is made.” Elton pointed to the coffee machine, then began to beat the eggs. “Rye, brown or white?”

Mac poured some coffee into a mug. “You’re a regular smorgasbord.”

Elton smiled.

Mac came over and placed a mug of coffee beside him. “Here, with all that beating, you’re going to need some energy.”

“Thanks,” Elton glanced over at his preheated omelet pan on the burner. He walked over and poured the eggs in. “The toaster is there. The bread is in the bread thingie.”

“Okay. I’ll make the toast,” Mac said. “I can do toast.”

Elton laughed.

“You like to cook, or what?” Mac asked, plugging in the four slice toaster.

“No choice,” Elton said. “It’s either cook or starve. I think it’s more fitting to say, I like to eat. Cooking relaxes me.”

“Um, from working with a gun to working with an egg beater.”

“Something like that,” Elton grinned. He turned down the heat on the burner and began to add his ingredients. “A little ham, green pepper, pearl onions, a little spice. Um.”

Mac leaned on the counter and sipped his coffee. “I put rye for both.”

“Good enough.”

“So, what do you usually do for Christmas besides bring down the mob and city officials?”

Elton glanced at Mac, shook his head. “Very clever. Actually, not much. I work the big days. I don’t have a family, except my father and I wouldn’t know what it was to spend Christmas with him. I don’t…have…anyone.” Elton lifted the edges of the omelet, then flipped it. He glanced up from the pan.

Mac was looking at him. “I’m sorry that your father is an ass. I’m beginning to know what it feels like not to have parents at this time of year. I’m grateful for Diane.”

“I would have liked to have had a sister or brother.
