CHAPTER 14
Mary read Kirkâs email over and over again, trying to decide if this was some sort of joke. Surely, Charles wouldnât dismiss her so summarily without even talking to her in person. What had gone so wrong in the few days since she had left? She had been aware of an undercurrent while she was with Charles, but it never occurred to her that he would be so heartless, so cruel, as to get his recently-estranged son to email her in this manner. No, she decided, Charles couldnât possibly have anything to do with this. Obviously, Kirk had taken it upon himself to dismiss her. She realized how much he resented her being in Charlesâs life but, even so, she couldnât believe that even Kirk would go to these lengths to be rid of her. She called Vera and between sobs managed to read her the hateful email.
âNow, now, Mary, you just calm down,â Vera said. âThat Kirk always was a hothead. Heâs probably into his cups and overstepping his authority. Why donât you call Bill and find out what he knows. Iâm sure thereâs got to be some explanation. Charles wouldnât do this to you, I know he really cares for you.â
âI hope youâre right,â Mary said. âI wish I could talk to Charles but he doesnât have a phone in his hospital room. I just canât believe this is happening. I feel like such a fool for being taken in like this. Thanks for being such a good friend, Vera, Iâll call you again once I know more. Bye.â
Bill was out when Mary called. Alice answered the phone. It took her a while to work out what Mary was saying between sobs and her own gasps.
âKirk said what?â she asked, incredulous. âLast I heard, he and Dad werenât even speaking so I donât know how he thinks he can speak on Dadâs behalf like this. Iâll ask Bill to call Kirk when he gets home and try to find out whatâs going on. Sorry about all this, Mary. I know Kirk can be difficult at times but this is inexcusable, if you ask me. Iâll call you later when we know more. Take care and try not to worry. Bye.â
It was almost nine oâclock before Bill came home and Alice had a chance to tell him what had happened.
âOh brother, this is the last thing I need,â Bill said, rubbing his temples before picking up the phone.
Alice left him alone to make the call. When Bill joined her in the den half an hour later, he looked exhausted.
âWell it seems Kirk went to visit Dad in the hospital, which I guess is a good thing. Apparently, Dad told Kirk he couldnât handle the stress of being in a relationship with Mary any longer. Seems thatâs why he ended up in hospital in the first place - too much running around for an old guy, according to the doctors. I told Kirk Iâd come over on the weekend, once Dadâs out of the hospital.
