The phone rang shortly after midnight. Cam lunged at the nightstand, answering before the second ring.

“Hello?”

“Happy birthday! It’s officially your birthday, right? I didn’t screw up the math?”

Cam sat on the bed, beaming. “Your math was perfect. Just a few minutes after midnight.”

“Thank God. Tell me, did you like your surprise?”

“Yes, until Danielle talked me into telling her all about my first birthday with you. I don’t think I can visit them anymore. She knows too much.” Sharon’s laugh warmed Cam’s heart.

“I swear, you’re the only butch I know that hates talking about her sex life.” Cam’s cheeks warmed. “You’re blushing right now, aren’t you?”

“Dammit, Sharon,” Cam said through her laughter. “And who are all these butches you know? Are you calling to tell me about your secret harem on my birthday?”

“Yes, my plan was to surprise you with an orgy when I got home. I’m training a whole group of lesbians up for you,” Sharon replied dryly.

“So my birthday present was a cookie and a gift certificate for sex?”

“Danielle didn’t give it to you? I hope she doesn’t think she can keep it for herself. Marcus might be a little pissed.”

Cam fell into giggles, the image too bizarre to think about for long. “Well hell, if we’re going that far you might as well invite Sarah too. And a shit ton of alcohol.”

After their laughter subsided, Cam said, “This is exactly what I needed. You teasing me. Us laughing at something ridiculous. Thank you for finding the time to call. It’s the perfect way to start my birthday.”

“We’ll celebrate double next year. And if you want to cash in that orgy gift certificate, just say the word.”

“No need. Even with the whole planet to choose from, I’d choose you.”

“Always the romantic,” Sharon replied, a smile in her voice.

“You’re all the orgy I need,” Cam said, dropping her voice as low as she could.

“No,” Sharon said as she laughed, “just no.”

After another round of laughter, Cam filled Sharon in on her weekend, focusing on Ellen’s conversation on the way home from the concert since she didn’t know how much time they’d have.

“Did you really channel me to help her?”

“Yes! It was fun to offer relationship help to someone else rather than needing the help. And now you can stop worrying that she has a crush on me.”

“Huh.” Sharon grew quiet, leaving just the background hum of the line in Cam’s ear.

“That’s all you have to say? I’m not completely hopeless when it comes to relationships. I convinced you to stick around after all.”

“It’s not that. Not really. But I wish I could have been there to see you in action. You seem to be changing a lot. I—” Sharon paused.

Cam tried to guess but opted for the safety of asking a question. “What? Don’t leave me hanging, Sharon.”

“I just hope you’ll still need me after all this.”

“Always,” Cam replied, dismissing Sharon’s concern. It couldn’t be a real concern anyway, just a product of the deployment. “Besides, until Ellen actually talks
