Chapter Eleven

Even though the surrounding water was dark, the exhilaration of being in my siren form, moving powerfully through the deep, propelled me to a speed I’d never reached. I strained to see ahead, sensing that I was getting closer to Siren Island with every stroke of my tail. I’d only ever approached by land, but I let the ring guide me, feeling the tug get stronger as I closed the distance.

A triton appeared to my left, swimming back the way I’d come. I almost choked, but kept going, praying he wouldn’t see me. His long hair streamed out behind him, his powerful muscles speeding him through the water even faster than the breakneck speed I’d achieved. He kept going, but I couldn’t breathe a sigh of relief. He was headed towards my friends. Indecision and worry almost made me turn around, but I knew I’d already come this far. We’d never get a chance like this again. I doubled down and pushed, swimming even faster. If there was one triton about, chances were there would be more. They were the official protectors of the island, even though the Siren Council liked to pretend they were the most important beings.

I passed the bottom of the pillars that heralded the entrance into the cove. It wouldn’t be long now. I kept going. The ring felt warm on my hand and I hoped that meant I was getting closer. The tugging sensation got stronger, and I worried the ring would come right off my finger.

As I came to the coral reef that signified my upcoming left turn, the ring burned so hot I had to force myself not to shout. I slowed down, floating in place as I tried to figure out where I needed to go. My instinct said to take a left, where I’d end up at the harbor. But apparently, the ring wanted me to go to the right. I looked in both directions, torn, before swimming to the right.

I was in uncharted territory, at least as far as I knew. My only visits to the island hadn’t included this area, and I had no clue what I was getting myself into. I pushed those thoughts aside and kept going. Strange, luminescent creatures floated past me, lighting up the water. It was almost as if they were showing me the way. I didn’t know if they were part of the tracking spell, but their presence was comforting.

Suddenly, a land mass appeared up ahead. Confused, I came to another halt, ignoring the red-hot ring for a moment. What was this? I swam to the right, circling the rocks until I realized I’d found a tiny island. As I swam around the corner, I nearly smacked into the hull of a boat. The creatures I’d been following winked out of sight, leaving me alone in the dark water. I came to the surface and looked up, peering through the gloom to spot the name on the back of the vessel.

My heart sank as I recognized the lettering.
