Chapter Seven

Brock was so damn sore. He’d heard the saying that it was the second day after doing strenuous activity that the pain was the worst. That was true.

Over the course of the afternoon two days before, Brock’s friends had left his mother’s home, mostly in pairs. After lunch, Garner had holed up in the office for another hour with Korbin, then said his good-byes. Brock had been sorry and relieved to see Garner leave. How he could feel both at the same time he wasn’t sure.

Having been busy weed-whacking around the yard, Brock had seen the man leave, but hadn’t spoken to him. Garner had offered him a half-smile and a nod. Then, he’d climbed into a newer model Lexus SUV and driven away.

Brock had kept finding more and more to do at his mother’s home. Between chores and speaking with his mother, he hadn’t gotten out of there until well after sunset. At least his buddies hadn’t crashed his solitude.

After doing some stretching yesterday, Brock had felt good. He thought he’d be fine. Waking up that morning, he realized he’d been wrong.

Getting through his day as a trainer at the gym had been an interesting form of torture. He had kept the part time job after graduating with a business degree because he liked something just for himself... especially since all his buddies were now in a couple. Plus, it helped to keep busy.

Hearing the sound of vehicles and the murmur of approaching voices, Brock knew his solitude was about to be encroached upon. While he’d hated so often finding himself alone when he’d been in the big farmhouse, he enjoyed being alone in his small apartment. Brock would never admit that it was because he was constantly on the lookout for Garner.

Brock had hoped his lover would drop by the evening before. It had almost been two weeks, after all. He rolled his eyes at his thoughts and heaved to his feet.

I should not be thinking like that.

Reaching the door before he heard his doorbell ring, Brock swung the door open and almost got a fist to the forehead for his trouble. Tyson just managed to pull back his fist where it appeared he’d been about to pound on the door.

“Whoa, sorry, man,” Tyson said, grinning.

Brock grunted. He glanced beyond Tyson and spotted Korbin, Kai, and Nathan. Sighing, he stepped backward and turned, motioning with his hand for them to enter.

“Someone’s in a rotten mood,” Korbin stated mildly from somewhere behind him.

Returning to the sofa, Brock groaned as he eased back onto it. His lower back ached and his thighs and shoulders screamed. “Holy shit,” he moaned. Hearing his door close, he turned his focus to his friends. Offering a wry smile, Brock told them, “Sorry, guys. I’m more than a little sore.”

Kai curled up in the other corner of Brock’s sofa, his feet tucked under him. His brows furrowed as he swept his dark-eyed gaze over him. “What did you do?”

Brock snorted. “Really? What did I do? You all had left by mid-afternoon.
