Chapter 10

Standing outside Carol's apartment George felt a bit nervous. Need to calm down, just tell her how you feel, he thought. George glanced at his watch as he saw more of Carol's neighbors coming home from work. He was about to take a seat on the steps when he noticed her at the corner of the block. She started walking faster as she saw him standing there.

"Hey, Carol," he tried to say casually.

"Hey? What do you mean hey? What are you doing here George? How did you even know I'd be here?"

George was caught off guard by how angry she was. "I uh, I wanted to talk to you. I guessed you would be heading home so … "

"Na uh. First of all, you don't camp out in front of my apartment like some kind of stalker. Second, if you want to speak to me, pick up the damn phone. You need to go." She stood glaring at him and waiting for him to move. George side-stepped making room for Carol to go up the steps.

"You're right. I should have called you first. It's just that I wanted to talk and see if we could work this out," said George looking at her and lowering his eyes after seeing the pain in her eyes.

"What's the rush? The guilt getting to you? Go home, George. I've got nothing to say to you right now," she said, making her way up the steps and reaching inside her purse for her keys.

"What about tonight; can I call you tonight?"

Turning back, she looked at him for a couple of seconds and finally replied, "Yeah. We can talk tonight." She stood there looking at him.

"Okay, tonight it is," he said, walking over to his car. George sat in his car staring blankly at the steering wheel. At least she didn't kick me this time, he thought. Putting the key in the ignition, he headed home.

George sat on his couch trying to watch a movie and failing terribly to ignore the time. When you're in a rush you never seem to have enough time; now it can't move fast enough, he thought. Grabbing the notepad that was lying beside him on the couch, he reread the thoughts that were jotted on the page. "When I think about what I did to you, it feels like I'm watching someone else's life. You're the best thing … " He tore the page off the notepad and crumpled it into a ball. Without looking he threw it in the general direction of the kitchen where it landed beside the other balled-up pages he had discarded. "Damn it," he said aloud as he realized that it was almost nine o'clock. Reaching for the phone on his lamp stand, he looked at the numbers trying to compose his thoughts. He got up and threw the handset on the couch. Dropping to the floor, he did a quick set of push-ups trying to burn off some nervous energy. He sat heavily as he tried to catch his breath.
