I genuinely don’t know what’s going on, but I’m scared. His linked knuckles are white from the pressure where they rest at the back of his neck, and his breathing is seriously erratic.

I’ve seen so many new sides of Nick today that I’m starting to wonder if he has multiple personalities. Not like I’m gonna run if he does, but a visit to a doctor might be in order.

“Nick,” I whisper, tugging my skirt down over my hips. “Are you okay?”

He slowly pushes to his feet, cock only slightly less intimidating in its mostly relaxed form. I can’t fathom the curl of heat that flickers back to life in my chest, but I squash it. Not the time, body.

“Sure.” His voice is gruff and emotionless at the same time.

“Is this about the news you got? Listen, we don’t need to go to this stupid viewing. I’ll stay here with you, make you some tea or coffee or whatever you like, and we’ll relax on the couch and—”

He barks a sharp laugh, letting his head fall back, stare boring into the ceiling. “Of course you would. Do you know why? Because you’re perfect, Scarlet. You’re goddamn perfect.”

I clack my jaw shut. Why does he sound mad about that?

He scrubs his face with a short groan and ducks to pick up his pants and shirt, laying them slowly on the bed as he exhales.

“I’m good. Sorry.” He stares at his clothes, hands on his hips, before stomping to his dresser and yanking out a new pair of underwear.

“And nope. Staying here won’t fix anything.” Finally, he glances at me. “For either of us.”

He stills, one leg in his boxer briefs and scans my body before quickly tugging them all the way on and crossing to me.

“I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of seeing you in my space.”

He grips my face, and I melt before our mouths even touch again. Maybe this means the nice, normal version is returning.

When he pulls back, his expression isn’t any softer, but his eyes are. “Sorry about your skirt. I should have just peeled it off slowly instead.”

“Don’t be sorry. It was hot.” I grin, hoping he’ll match it.

I only get a small one in return, but it drops the next second.

“And no need to check her room. I have a safety pin.”

He goes to the bathroom, and I follow him to the door. Clearly, he doesn’t expect it because I find him braced against the sink, eyes squeezed closed.

He’s gripping the porcelain so hard his knuckles are white again.

I watch him battle a horde of demons in his mind, until he wins, finally opening his eyes. He clocks me in the reflection, opens the medicine cabinet, grabs a safety pin out of a small, clear container, and closes the door, bringing his face back into view. Holding the pin over his shoulder, he forces a smile that does nothing but make me sad.

“So. Anything I need to know about Katelyn? Sudden moves okay?”

I take it, and smile back with a shrug.
