Chapter Eight: Healing’s Price

Rak helped Jisten out of the pit. He studied Jisten’s ankle, trying to assess the damage and despairing of being able to heal it. “Jisten, your ankle is a mess.”

“Oh, that,” Jisten said, and he suddenly stumbled. Rak guessed that the adrenaline was wearing off, enabling him to feel the pain now.

“Healer’s kit,” Rak snapped at Hamib. “Now.”

“At least I didn’t succeed in breaking it.”

“Thank the night for that. Cuts I can suture, if they are not too deep.” Rak took a wineskin from Napiet, knelt down and squirted it over the cuts, trying to clear enough of the blood and debris to see the flesh beneath. The sound of Jisten’s teeth grinding together was perfectly audible. “Sorry, love,” Rak murmured. He settled back and looked up at Issarn. “Give him morphea, twenty drops.”

Issarn raised his eyebrows at the dose—it was close to overdose levels, but he did as Rak asked, taking the wineskin back long enough to fill a cup to mix the drug in. He pressed the dose into Rak’s hand, and Rak pressed the cup to Jisten’s lips. “Drink, love.”

Jisten stroked Rak’s hand as he drank it down. Once the dose was in him, Rak stood and approached Virien.

“Master, Jisten’s injuries are severe.”

“So? Why should I care?” Virien appeared disgruntled. The fight hadn’t gone as planned, and he hadn’t gotten to watch a gang rape. Rak couldn’t find it in himself to feel a moment’s sympathy for Virien’s plight.

“You should care because he is all the power you have over me. If not for him, I would rid myself of your seed and kill you.” Rak stood poised, ready for anything, hoping that Virien would see sense. When the man didn’t immediately hit him, he said, “He needs a real healer, not just a horse doctor like me.” He cast himself in terms a Koilathan would understand. “There is a temple here—I saw it as we rode in. They are sure to have a healer.”

“A temple healer? For a slave?” Virien snorted. “I’ll send for the slave healer—if you make it worth my while. What do I get out of having your lover healed?”

“I want a healer, not a butcher,” Rak growled.

Virien cuffed him. “Mouth off again and I won’t let your Jisten have any healer at all. I repeat, what will you give me in exchange for summoning a healer?”

Rak pointed to a building set a little bit away from the main manor, hard against the river. “I would wager that is a boathouse.”

“Yes, it appears so. What’s your point?”

“Baron Ranon owns a riverboat, a steamer, much like the one you lost.” Rak leaned in. “You see Jisten healed and I will please the Baron so greatly that if you were to ask for the loan of his riverboat, he would give it to.”

Virien barked a laugh. “He would agree even without your assistance, Sija. He owes me a lot of money.” Virien fondled Rak’s balls. “Try again.”

“I will give you a full service Zothian bath and massage.
