I STOP AT Faith’s door. “Sorry I wasn’t there to stop what happened to you.”

Faith gives me a gentle hug and steps back. “Harley, you can’t protect everyone all the time. Shit happens. I got in the path of it last night. How do you think I feel? I brought Jase into it. I would have been the only casualty if he hadn’t had a drink of that loaded mocktail.”

I change the topic. “How long you thinking of staying in San Diego?”

Without hesitation, Faith replies, “As long as it takes to get Jase talking again.”

I can see she believes he will start talking again while she is here. “Good luck with that. We’ve been trying for six years.”

“Maybe you’ve been approaching it the wrong way. I think this morning he wanted to talk to me in the bathroom when I was throwing up. I’m new to all this. He’s familiar with you guys and the way you joke about him not talking and his texting. Give me some time with him. I don’t think we should send Chance off without Jase being whole again.”

She truly believes she can make a difference with my brother’s demons. I hope she can crack him.

“I was hoping later tonight you could take me out and show me around. I could bring my camera, take some photos, and see what I can do with them.”

“Doc is coming back at nine to check on you two and look you over. If he gives you the all clear and you get some more rest, we can see how you are feeling later and what you are up for. How’s your forehead feeling?”

“It is what it is. I’m just a little embarrassed I took a dive like that. How’s your coffee table?”

I can’t help laughing at Faith. “I think it won the round with a knock-out.” I can see more and more of Chance in her. She doesn’t sweat the smaller things in life, and she wants to fix my brother. That’s something Chance would want to do, too.

“Go rest, and then you can start thinking about performing miracles.”
