Danny was still in their room with Kieran when Craig finally made it back up.

“Anything?” Kieran asked anxiously.

“Maybe, maybe not,” he told her, but he smiled, taking her hands. “Kevin may be the actor in your family, but that was one hell of a performance.”

“Yeah. It just cost us all a lot of sleep,” Danny said.

She elbowed her brother.

“Bracken and Mike were pretty good, too. They came back into the great hall and announced that they might have seen footprints—too hard to tell on the rocky ground and in the dark. But the ploy was a good thing, maybe. If someone else is on the island, we need to batten down,” she told Craig.

“They probably enjoyed it,” Craig said. “Both of them are good agents—they know how to keep poker faces.”

“What did you get?” Danny asked Craig.

“Evie was in the kitchen. Victor must have still been up, too. And Elayne. Margie seemed to come from her room,” Craig said.

“No one came running in from outside,” Danny said glumly. “And no one was a no-show. Did this get us anywhere?”

“Yes, I think so.”

“Where?” Danny pressed.

“I don’t know yet. But it was interesting to see the nocturnal activities of the household. So, Danny—go to bed,” Craig said.

“Go to bed? You just cost me an entire night’s sleep!”

“You can sleep late tomorrow,” Craig told him.

“I can?”

“I’m going in for the autopsy. With Mike. Bracken will be on the island.”

“We’re going to that meeting tomorrow night,” Kieran said.

“What?” Craig asked, frowning as he turned to look at her.

“Craig,” she reminded him, “tomorrow night is the meeting of the ancient-alien theorists—the Believers. I think it’s important that I go.”

“We go,” he said.

She shook her head. “An FBI agent working on a case? No. Just Danny and I should go.”

He was quiet. She knew that he didn’t want her and Danny going alone. “I’ll be waiting for you. On the street. You understand? And if you don’t show up right when you should, I’ll drop in on that meeting.”

She nodded. “Fine.”

He turned to Danny again. “Go to bed!”

“You’re the one who woke me up. But yeah I’m going, I’m going.”

They heard Danny’s door close. Craig turned to Kieran. “Ah, well, we’ve got two or three hours left.”

“Great.”

He grinned. She knew that his adrenaline was racing.

“I only need fifteen minutes of that.”

“Fast draw. I could complain.”

“But you won’t. I promise,” he told her.

Like a kid, he made a leap to the bed and patted the mattress at his side.

Kieran obligingly slid in.

In a few minutes, she was no longer thinking about sleep.
