No more yielding but a dream.

As the days passed, Simeon wondered if Anthony had been real at all, or if he had only imagined him. He couldn’t bear to be in his flat. He couldn’t sit on the sofa without remembering Anthony sitting there beside him. And he was convinced he could still smell his cologne. He tried to focus on practical things—a meeting with his thesis supervisor, a trip to the supermarket and hour upon hour in various libraries, moving from one to the other through the evening as each of them shut up for the night to delay the moment when he had to go home.

Unable to be indoors, Simeon wandered the streets around his flat. Anthony had said he lived nearby—maybe he’d catch sight of him? He paused by garden walls, staring into uncurtained rooms, waiting in case Anthony might walk into a square of light.

But he never did.

Simeon wandered semi-casually into the Lion. Standing in the doorway, he scanned the room, hoping he’d see that glorious head of silvering blond hair, those broad shoulders and those bright blue eyes. But Anthony wasn’t there. The regulars had spotted him, though, and Simeon rushed away. He could’ve asked someone—surely one of them had a phone number, something—but it was too intrusive.

Anthony had decided that he didn’t want him. He was gone. And Simeon was pathetic for not letting go. It was insulting to Anthony’s grief for a man he’d spent half his life with—how could Simeon feel like this after one evening?

But still, he wandered the streets, hoping he’d find the man who had slipped through his fingers.

All the while, carrying Anthony’s tie in his pocket.
