Chapter Twenty-Eight

“This is Ms. Norris’s room, she hasn’t had visitors in a very long time,” the nurse we were following commented as she showed us into a bright room. There were no decorations and the stinging smell of alcohol gel and antiseptics nearly made me sneeze. My heart sank when I looked around the room, this woman was entirely alone. Nothing to show she had visitors or any family. I knew that meant we were in the right place.

A woman, who could only have been Fiona, lay on the bed, tubes and machines surrounding her. The rhythmic beeping in one corner told us that her heart was still beating and she was still alive.

“She’s been here for over twenty years, you said?” I stepped into the room first, coming to stand next to the bed. My eyes burned and I found it hard to breathe. She was alone, looking at her it was easy to see through the mild glamor. She was also fae.

Max walked around and stood opposite me. His eyes widened when he looked at her face, his own paling. He stared intently, as if unable to look away.

“Yes, her husband brought her in. He visited her every day for a week and then disappeared.”

“Can you—” Max coughed. “Can you describe him?”

The nurse tilted her head. “I’m sorry, I wasn’t working here then. The story is that he got into a bar fight and was killed. We didn’t hear about it until his picture was in the papers. Her care was paid for in advance and the order was to keep her on life support until a family member said otherwise.”

I looked down at Fiona’s face. It was thin and sickly, a gray tinge to her complexion. Her hair was dark brown and looked dull under the fluorescent lights. At least she looked peaceful.

“You said you were related?” the nurse asked, looking at Max. “You’re her nephew?”

“Yes, on his mother’s side,” Felix said when Max didn’t answer, he just stared at the woman on the bed and didn’t appear to be listening any longer.

I pursed my lips, glancing at the nurse. “Can we have some time, let’s give him a moment.”

I touched the nurse’s elbow and led her toward the door. Before she left I turned her to look into my eyes. “Believe what we say is true. You don’t need proof, file the necessary paperwork while we wait here.”

Her eyes glazed over for a second until she nodded, giving me a dazed smile. “Of course.”

I gently closed the door, waiting a few moments in case someone else came in but no one did. I turned the lock and faced Felix and Max.

“Are you okay?” I asked Max, his head jerked up and his eyes were turbulent with emotion. “What is it?”

“It’s not possible.” Max shook his head, his eyes looking suspiciously damp.

“What?” Felix asked.

“It’s my mom,” Max said, his legs giving way under him. He knelt beside the bed, taking his mother’s hand. I gaped at his revelation as he stared at her tenderly.
