Chapter 7

“Bonnie, I’m sure it’s fine,” Molly said over the phone. She was seated in the back of Jack’s patrol car; Jeffrey was up front, glaring at Jack the whole way to the women’s prison.

“No, it’s pink!” Bonnie exclaimed.

“There is nothing wrong with pink,” Molly assured her. “Our very first dessert special was strawberry and marshmallow ice cream.”

“But it’s supposed to be peppermint bark!” Bonnie yelped. “We melted so much white chocolate to make this, and I put the crunched up peppermints in too soon, and they melted, now the whole thing is pink! I don’t even know how to tell you how many batches I’ve completely ruined!”

“Bonnie, it’s not that big of a deal,” Molly said. “I know you’re a little upset. But, it’s just the color that’s messed up, right? How do they taste?”

“Well, it actually tastes pretty good,” Bonnie said.

“See? That’s the important thing,” Molly assured her.

“Ugh… I’ve just done so much of it…” Bonnie said. “You put me in charge of the shop while you were gone, and I just…”

“This is hardly a disaster, Bonnie,” Molly said.

“Wait!” Bonnie suddenly exclaimed. “I have an idea! Got to go!” And, just like that, Bonnie hung up.

“Well, I guess she’s got that handled,” Molly said with a smirk.

“She overreacting?” Jeffrey asked.

“Just a little,” Molly said. “I mean, pink peppermint bark is really not the worst thing that could have happened after leaving four teenagers alone to man my shop for a week.”

“We’re here,” Jack said suddenly, and Molly looked out the window in time to see the prison come into view.

They headed inside, and Jack mingled a bit with one of the guards. It took a while, but he eventually was able to convince the man that it was okay for them to meet with one of the prisoners despite the fact that they were looking into something off the books. They were taken to a large, open room where a number of prisoners were meeting with family members who all seemed to be there on unofficial pre-holiday meetups. The three of them had only just sat down when Trish was brought in, dressed in her bright orange jumpsuit with her hands cuffed in front of her. She sat down, staring at the three of them curiously. “Who are you two?” she asked, looking to Jeffrey and Molly.

“My name is Molly Jenn,” Molly began, and Trish groaned.

“Ah… you’re Martin’s kid,” she said, and she seemed less thrilled than even Eddie. “What are you doing here, kid?”

“We’re looking into my father’s last case,” Molly said. “The one he was looking into when he was killed.”

“I thought he didn’t have any open cases?” Trish asked.

“He was looking into something off the books,” Molly said. “And while we’re not entirely sure, we think you might have been involved somehow.”

Trish huffed. “I don’t know about that. Martin and I weren’t exactly buddy-buddy towards the end.”

“Trish, I know what happened,” Molly said. “I know my dad accused you of stealing the money.”

“Yeah, and he was wrong,” Trish said.
