Harper replayed Saundersâ taunting accusation that his explosive documents were simply handed to him, dozens of times in his mind. Until that cruel revelation, Harper had believed that it was his journalistic diligence, or at least divine intervention, that had produced the political find of the century. But Saundersâ motives for letting Harper think he had discovered them were also intriguing. Saunders must have reasoned that such a discovery would excite a reporter and propel him forward on the story. But at the same time, Saunders didnât want Harper getting too cocky, and he also wanted his chosen reporter to know that Saunders was guiding and helping him behind the scenes.
Harper had come to realize that Saunders was both incredibly shrewd and calculating. But whether or not Saunders could match wits with Benton Simmons was still an open question. In some ways, Saundersâ actions had reminded Harper of the seemingly cruel tennis coach he had been lucky enough to have in high school. Like any good coach, the man had seen the rough potential in the gangly teenager, and was determined to bring it out, even if it killed the inexperienced player in the painful process.
From Harperâs meager playing skills to his considerable ego about his imagined talent, the coach had stripped him down to nothingness. It was not until some time later that Harper had finally understood the coachâs actions. For only in this humbled state does any player begin to understand how much help he really needs, and how important a coach can be in providing the required skills and discipline to excel.
That coach had undoubtedly seen the same burning desire to win that Saunders had also observed from afar. The coach had witnessed Harper obsessively hitting tennis balls in the same manner that Saunders had noticed Harper relentlessly tracking Blackstone in the Florida race of 2000.
Once Harper accepted that the documents had been placed in his path for a reason, he viewed Saundersâ method of delivery as a clever means to an end. Saunders could have mailed the boxes directly to Harper, but like a good coach, Saunders preferred to prod the ego and stoke the journalistic fires by allowing Harper to believe he had made the rare find on his own.
Moving Harper to Florida in 2000 like a chess piece may have set the game in motion, allowing Saundersâ chosen reporter to inflict serious political damage on Blackstone.
Yet beyond wounding Harperâs pride, Saundersâ delivery of such damning evidence still left his initial motivations unexplained. Whatever wrongs Blackstone had committed against Saunders, these affronts had driven Saunders to some form of political madness. Hunting down the president and revealing his transgressions to the public appeared to be the only cure for Saundersâ affliction.
The question of Saundersâ real motives still gnawed at Harper. Who was the enigma who he called Saunders, and what ulterior motives were really driving him?
