16.

You look like twins, people had said to Rachel and Katherine all through their childhood. Their mother hadn’t meant to dress them identically, except for a few frilly ensembles at Christmas, but Rachel had managed it on her own with hand-me-downs. The same haircut, too, bobbed with thick bangs, and Katherine didn’t mind. She liked the doubling, often found it useful. Who was to say whether it was Katherine or Rachel who had been heard saying that rude word or doing that bad thing? “Are you sure it was me?” Katherine would ask, turning the adult unsure. “That sounds more like Rachel,” and Rachel would laugh silently, in on the joke.

Rachel was prettier, their mother told her, and when Rachel said it wasn’t true—angrily, tearfully—her mother was embarrassed. She’d been trying to help, Rachel realized later. By then Katherine had started high school, and she was attracting even more attention than her parents had expected: she was a genius, which Rachel had always known, and a pill, disrespectful of her teachers and a nightmare when she was bored.

Rachel didn’t want to be the pretty sister, but Katherine had said that it was good. “I’m not jealous,” she’d said. “One of us needs to be pretty, for our team. The team that’s us. You’ll see.”
