My muscles were screaming at me to stop, but I pushed through the pain. I always did. I wasn’t going to let this shit break me.

Not ever.

I was fucking alive and I could feel it through every pull and pinch on my muscles. Thank God.

I’d already had therapy time with the shrink. We talked about my nightmares, the fact that I still have to fight myself not to drink. One second, minute, hour, day at a time. I wasn’t going to fall back into that black hole. I was covered in sweat, rivulets dipping between my pectorals and sliding down my back. I pushed harder and harder until my PT told me to quit. I wiped my face with a towel and ran it across my back. As I turned, I noticed a familiar face by the weight benches. He was shirtless, and an ugly scar stared back at me from his shoulder. I stood and nodded to my PT, then crossed the room.

“Danny?”

He looked startled to see me and tried to cover his shoulder with a shirt.

“Too late.” I motioned to his shoulder. “Already saw it.”

Danny sighed, dropping the shirt.

“Hey,” he said quietly.

I took a seat on the bench next to him.

“Are you about done?” I asked.

“Yeah. I guess.”

“Why don’t we go out for some lunch?”

“You want to hear about it, don’t you?”

“Only if you’re willing to tell.”

He shot me a sideways glance and motioned to my leg. “You sure you’re up for it?”

“Always, dude.”

I texted Tiernan and let him know I was going to be out a little longer and then followed Danny outside.

We sat in the back of Social and I stared in awe as Danny wolfed down a Social burger in seconds flat. I bit into my burger, eyeing him skeptically.

“Where do you put it all?” I asked.

“In my dick.” Danny grinned.

I chuckled.

“It was my old partner.” Danny looked around, lowering his voice. “He left me to fend for myself in a very volatile situation.”

“What?!” I choked.

“He doesn’t like gays. Hated being partnered with me in the first place. I tried to be my usual self with him, but he never warmed up to me. I thought for sure someday he’d see me as a person and not just a gay guy. Anyway, we got called to an apartment building about some kind of drug deal gone wrong, shots fired and all. I thought he was behind me as I entered. I was wrong.”

“Son of a bitch!” I hissed. Quite a few heads turned at my outburst and I narrowed my eyes. “What?” I snapped at the intruding eyes.

“Anyway, no one had my back.” Danny shrugged. “So I got shot. Eaton, my partner, got the heave-ho from the department after several witnesses said they saw him leaning up against an adjacent building smoking a cigarette while his partner was getting shot in the building right across the way. He never even moved when gunshots sounded.”

“Fucker!” I bit out.

“So my brother, Braden, had me transferred out here to keep me safe.
