Chapter 21

I was in no rush to get back to the crime scene. Even if there was evidence to tie me or Eddie to the chaos that happened the night before, my private investigator story gave me a way out. I had hoped so – where were those FBI agents? It had been about an hour since my last conversation with Chief Higginson. The detectives and medical examiners were pulling him in a thousand directions. That was fine with me though. The longer that he’s occupied, the less he’d think about Ca ’Michael Emmitt Marshall – Private Investigator.

As I was starting to think the FBI was going to leave me hanging, three black SUV’s with black tinted windows came speeding down the street towards the building. Sirens were blaring and lights were flashing – it was perfect! Everyone stopped what they were doing to look at a show more entertaining than a three-ring circus. Two agents stepped out of the first SUV. They were the “black sedan” agents that gave me the tour through Columbia’s FBI field office about three days ago. The agents out of the second SUV did not look familiar to me. A chill ran down my spine when I laid eyes on them – that was never a good sign based on previous experiences. The third SUV held the man himself. Flanked on each side by an agent, Special Agent Anthony Bowman made an entrance that made my earlier disruption look like a turtle crossing the road.

“What a mess! Where is Marshall! Somebody get me Marshall and I mean right now.” Agent Bowman said that last order with a coldness that made me nervous.

“Sir – let me explain. This is our scene and…”

Bowman completely ignored the officer and continued to yell out across the crime scene. “Marshall! There you are – let’s go to my SUV and you can tell me what the hell is going on!”

After he locked us into the vehicle, he stopped yelling at me but had somehow become more frightening.

“Give me the quick version – now.”

It was time to implement the most fragile part of my plan. By bringing the FBI into the fold, my margin for error was very slim. Either the Columbia Police Department would lock me up for murder or the FBI would take me back to New York and definitely lock me up for murder. There was only one way out – and it was provided to me by Special Agent Bowman.

“I cannot finish my investigation of Harrison Phillips’ murder because of this situation. I enlisted my cousin to help me in the investigation and all we’ve had is trouble every step of the way.”

I could see Chief Higginson walking towards the vehicle – I had to hurry up.

“Long story short, we were led into a shoot-out with the suspect. He got away but we were able to get his informant that had been helping the suspect try to kill us. The informant actually tried to kill me himself.
