CHAPTER NINETEEN

Charlie raised her hand to knock on Chloe's door, but her knuckles didn't have time to connect, as the door suddenly swung open. Chloe jumped in surprise, her eyes wide. "Jesus Christ," she gasped and put a hand over her chest, wincing immediately when she brushed the red edges of her most recent tattoo. "You scared the shit out of me."

"Going somewhere?" Charlie asked with a raised brow.

"I'm out of coals," Chloe replied airily. "I'm making a run."

"Good. I'll join you."

Chloe fixed her with a look that clearly told Charlie she wasn't welcome, but Chloe merely sighed instead of arguing, she pursed her lips. "Suit yourself," she said.

Chloe opened her umbrella, which was patterned on the top with a series of cartoon cats, forcing Charlie to take another step back in order to avoid getting hit in the face. Chloe walked away from her apartment building, leaving Charlie to hurry after her. She ducked under the umbrella, glaring at the other woman as Chloe made no effort to make room for her. Chloe was much shorter than Charlie, and held her umbrella low, so that the tines on the inside rubbed against the top of Charlie's head.

"Don't you own a car?" Charlie complained, as they reached the ground floor and Chloe immediately turned left, out to the main street.

Chloe shook her head. "Car registration is one of the most closely monitored things these days," she replied. "No one fucks with taxes below a certain income bracket, and I already have enough dirt that if they could track my address, I'd be screwed."

Charlie didn't ask who “they” were. When it came to taxes, the government was nosier than God. Charlie pressed her lips together, digging her hands into the pockets of her coat to avoid them getting hit with freezing rain. The water on the ground soaked into her shoes, and the pavement was close enough to the road that they were in danger of being splashed if a car drove past them a little too fast.

"It's not a long walk," Chloe assured her, though Charlie was already shivering with cold and wincing at the wet squelch of her feet in her shoes.

"Have you found anything?" she asked, both to distract herself, and because she hadn't come all this way for nothing. The drive from Silver Spring to Springfield, on the south side of DC, wasn't exactly short, nor was it pleasant this time of day.

Chloe nodded, sighing to herself, her breath misting beneath the cover of the umbrella. "Yeah," she replied. They came to a stop at the crosswalk and waited for the light to turn.

Charlie pushed the button, wincing when the rain bit into her knuckles like an enraged cat, needle-sharp and freezing cold. "So turns out Heather married this guy, Ethan Montgomery, the third." Charlie blinked at her, and Chloe grinned. "Right? Of all the names to keep going to a third generation."

The light changed, and they waited to make sure no car was going to come
