Skylar grabbed a Snickers from the small shop in the lobby. The clerk seemed delighted to have someone to talk to. He gleefully asked how her day was and what she was doing in Atlanta. Her answers were curt. When she pulled her wallet out of her purse to pay, she realized her phone was upstairs. Now she had a second reason to get back to the room as soon as possible.

Alex did not like how long it had taken Connor to answer the door. By the time he got inside, he was pissed. He slammed Connor up against the wall, face first, then looked around to see if Connor was alone. The room was huge.

“See if Naese is here,” he said to Howie, who was already charging toward the closest bedroom.

“What the hell’s going on?” Connor said.

Alex told him to shut up.

“All clear,” Howie said, after he checked both bedrooms.

“Is that your cell phone?” Alex asked Connor, referring to the one on the table in the bedazzled case.

“No, it’s—”

“Ms. Naese’s?”

“No. It’s—”

“Bag the phone, Howie.”

Alex pulled out a pair of cuffs. “Hands behind your back.” Then he told Connor he had been charged with concealing evidence and read him his rights.
