Chapter Five
Brit
He was behind her net.
It was funny how she could always feel his gaze on her, how it was a warm and comforting weight. No judgment if a puck went in the net. But worry in his eyes if she took a hit. A smile, a small nod if she made a good save.
When heâd been on the team, heâd always tapped her pads with his stick after the whistle. Now, she felt those taps when he caught her gaze through the glass.
But it had been two monthsâalmost three!âsince theyâd filled out their foster parent application, the same amount of time since theyâd selected an adoption agency, and they heard . . . crickets.
Nothing.
No additional requests for paperwork.
Well, that wasnât a hundred percent true. Theyâd had an interview and a home inspection right after both applications were in.
But nothing since.
Their lawyer said, in this case, no news was good news. They hadnât been rejected from becoming foster parents, everything was just in process via that course, and the adoption agency just hadnât matched them with anyone yet. But . . . here, theyâd been worried about what might happen if both fronts had worked out, how theyâd manage with a full house and knowing it would be awesome, even as theyâd patted themselves on the back, thinking themselves so smart for working from multiple angles, especially when theyâd be happy with either route. And instead . . . disappointment.
âYouâre being ridiculous, Plantain,â she muttered to herself, skating a loop behind the back of the net to stretch her legs. âIt hasnât even been three months. These things take time.â She knew that. Their lawyer and the agencies had warned them. Their research had confirmed the fact.
It was just . . . patience wasnât her strong suit.
And Stefan was so fucking good, so freaking supportive and amazing. He was patient, was trying to put on a good show, pretending he wasnât worried or anxious about starting their family, and meanwhile, she could feel that impulse roiling under the surface of his skin.
Dammit.
She wanted to solve it for him.
She wanted to make him as happy as he made her andâ
The whistle blew. She sucked in a breath as the players lined up, readied herself in the net, and focused.
The puck dropped.
