CHAPTER THIRTEEN
Despite his jovial attitude when dropping her off, David was uncharacteristically somber as he drove them back to their apartment. Their leasing agreement allowed for a single parking pass in the lot below the building. Another reason Amelia had never considered getting a car for herself.
It was a quiet ride home, not even the radio breaking the silence. Finally, Amelia sighed as David pulled to a halt in a parking spot and killed the engine.
"Henry's mother called me during dinner," she said.
David turned, blinking at her in surprise.
"Apparently, Henry was called to New York by an art dealer who wanted to see his stuff," Amelia continued. "But Mary, his mom, hasn't heard from him since. So the timeline fits; he lured Henry away from the house so that Charlie was alone."
Easier to infiltrate. Easier to attack. Her stomach rolled with revulsion. She swore when she finally found the son of a bitch, she was going to beat him to a bloody pulp.
"If we follow the trail, we might find him," Amelia said flatly, unable to even pretend she held out hope. She was sure the art deal was a ruse. He might have used a real place, even a real name, but it was just so he could lure Henry away. He might have waylaid him during the drive up there, might have waited until he arrived, then put him up in a hotel on the company dime and hurt him while he was there.
She silently exited the car, heading toward the elevators and stairwell. She pushed the button to go up, and David caught up with her, his hands in his pockets. He sighed, breath misting in the cool night air.
"I'm sorry," he said.
She tilted her head, but her eyes were on the seam of the elevator doors.
"I wish I could do more," David added. "I feel like I should be doing more, but I'm at a loss. Missing persons isn't exactly in my wheelhouse."
Her frown deepened. "You never dealt with one?"
He shook his head. "Normally they don'tâ¦stay missing for long," he said carefully, but she knew what he meant. He worked in homicide. When he was called to a case, it was because there was a body.
"Shadow's pathology commands him to keep them alive," she said in a monotone. The elevator beeped, the doors opened, and they stepped inside. It was humid and sticky inside and smelled vaguely like an airplane. Her nose wrinkled, and David pushed the button for the fifth floor. The doors shut, and they began to rise.
"He'll keep her alive until he doesn't," David confirmed. "When one of you breaks."
"Dad forced him to go into hiding," she said. "He never broke. Probably pissed him off somethin' awful." Her lips twitched, not quite a smile. "He's a stubborn old bastard; I'll give him that. Shadow's a dog chasing a squirrel that refuses to die."
"Do you really think it's still Shadow?" David asked her.
"Still stuck on your copycat theory?"
"I meanâ¦" David sighed, running a hand through his hair, as the doors opened to the fifth floor.
