CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Nathan found he didn't have much time to put toward being nervous about the flight. After the first taxi, the jet traveled relatively smoothly through the clouds. Sunlight glinting sharply off the wing of the plane as they ascended through the clouds and broke through them. Beside him, Heather hummed once the light above them turned off with a quiet bell sound, telling them it was safe to get up and move around.

"Would you like something to drink?" she asked, unbuckling her seatbelt and sitting forward, tugging at the cuffs of her thick fur coat.

Nathan reached out to help her, shrugging the hood from her shoulders and pulling it from behind her back. Beneath the coat, she was wearing a pale purple sweater that ended halfway down her forearms, which were as heavy-laden with golden bands and jeweled bracelets as her fingers.

She took the coat from him and tossed it onto the opposite bench. "I always make sure there is a well-stocked bar when I go on any trip. Natasha!" she called, and one of the stewardesses appeared at her shoulder as if by magic. She smiled at the other woman. "Hello, darling. Let's open one of the whites, shall we?" She looked at Nathan and raised a brow. "You're not allergic to anything, are you?"

"A private plane is definitely a good place to find out," she said with a teasing grin and turned back to Natasha. "We can get started, then, I suppose." She waved a hand. "Whatever's ready."

Nathan watched her go and let out a little impressed whistle. "You certainly don't mess around," he said.

"At my age, messing around and wasting time become one and the same," Heather told him with a knowing smile.

Less than a moment later, the second woman steward appeared with a polished silver tray, holding two narrow, tall glasses, as well a bucket with ice and a towel, into which was buried the bottom half of a bottle of white wine.

"Oh, thank you, Jamie," Heather murmured.

Jamie pulled a wine bottle opener from a little pouch wrapped around her waist and set to uncorking the bottle as Heather bent forward and handed Nathan an empty glass. She paused, and hummed, arching a brow. "You don't look old enough to drink in America."

"I just turned twenty-one," Nathan said. It was a lie unless the timeline was a lie. But one person's truth may as well be the truth of a stranger. Who was going to argue with him? "And we're in international skies."

Heather laughed, throwing her head back. "Now you're thinking like a true member of the nouveau riche!" she crowed.

She held out her glass for Jamie to take once the bottle was opened, and Nathan watched as the pale liquid was poured, fizzing gently with just a hint of lingering carbonation. Jamie handed the drink back to Heather and reached for Nathan's.

Once his glass was half full, Jamie worked
